Texans Waive Rookie Cornerback Ahead of Jaguars Game

Rookie cornerback Alijah Huzzie was waived by the Houston Texans on Thursday, according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 in Houston.

The timing is a bit surprising, as it comes just one day after Huzzie was activated from the reserve/non-football injury list. He missed the first eight games of the season while recovering from a knee injury.

If Huzzie clears waivers, the Texans could look to bring him back on the practice squad.

Houston hosts the AFC South rival Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 10.

Rookie Recovering From ACL Tear in East/West Shrine Bowl

The 5-foot-10 Huzzie spent his final two collegiate seasons at North Carolina, where he had 82 tackles (56 solo), four interceptions and two sacks in 24 games.

A pre-draft scouting report by NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein projected Huzzie as a Day 3 pick, saying he “lacks measurables but is tough, athletic and experienced on special teams.”

Wilson noted that Huzzie has made a “speedy recovery” from an ACL tear sustained at the East-West Shrine Bowl. While that bodes well for his chances of playing this season, it remains to be seen where Huzzie may land.

Injuries Piling Up For Texans

The Texans are in decent shape at cornerback, with Derek Stingley Jr. and Kamari Lassiter occupying the top two spots ahead of Tremon Smith.

Nickelback Jalen Pitre has not practiced this week because of a concussion and is likely to miss Sunday’s game against Jacksonville, while rookie third-rounder Jaylin Smith was recently placed on season-ending injured reserve with an undisclosed ailment. Smith was also on IR earlier this season due to a hamstring injury that sidelined him for four weeks.

The Texans lead the NFL in both total defense and points allowed (15.1 per game). Despite that, they’re 3-5 and already trail the first-place Indianapolis Colts by 3.5 games in the division.

Adding to the team’s injury woes, veteran backup Davis Mills will start Sunday at quarterback in place of C.J. Stroud (concussion).
