On Tuesday October 14, 2025, Cincinnati Reds beat writer Mark Sheldon speculated that Reds ace pitcher Hunter Greene will be available on the trade market, and San Francisco Giants fans immediately salivated at the idea of bringing Greene to San Francisco.
“Count me all the way in,” popular Giants fan account Giant Hot Takes said in a post on X.
The Reds would be seeking MLB ready hitters in exchange for Greene.
One of the Giants’ biggest needs heading into the 2025-26 offseason is starting pitching. They have only three proven starting pitchers under contract for 2026: Logan Webb, Robbie Ray and Landen Roupp.
Why This Deal Makes Sense: The Giants’ Current Roster Imbalance
The Giants have a really weirdly constructed current roster.
On the infield, they have three nearly-everyday players who are great defenders and solid hitters: Willy Adames, Matt Chapman and Casey Schmitt. Sluggers Rafael Devers and Bryce Eldridge figure to split time between first base and designated hitter.
In the outfield, they have two guys who have the potential to be great hitters in Heliot Ramos and Jung Hoo Lee. But both are awful defenders and remember, the DH spot is already occupied.
On the pitching side, there’s no question that they need starting pitching and they will definitely need some bullpen reinforcements as well after they dealt away their best bullpen arms at the 2025 trade deadline.
If you watched the 2025 Giants season and how inconsistent they were offensively this may sound insane, but on paper, the Giants have a surplus of hitters.
But a more accurate thing to say may be that the Giants have a surplus of guys who can only hit and not play defense.
That has made Heliot Ramos, a 2024 All-Star once viewed as the potential future face of the franchise, expendable.
If they can formulate a trade package to acquire Greene centered around Ramos and other hitting-only prospects like Marco Luciano, and then sign a free agent like Cody Bellinger who is a good hitter and better defender to replace Ramos, that honestly helps the Giants have a more healthy roster in more ways than one.
Hunter Greene’s Oracle Park History
The Giants have had plenty of great pitchers in the history of their franchise, including some of the best of all time. But they have never had a pitcher with the amount of natural talent that Greene possesses.
He primarily throws a four-seam fastball that sits around 98-101 mph. He also throws a slider and a changeup.
With his velocity and overall pitch mix, he seems like a perfect candidate to thrive at Oracle Park, which is very famously pitcher friendly.
That’s proven to be exceedingly true in his young career. In two appearances at Oracle Park, Greene has not allowed a single earned run.
He’s thrown 14 innings with an ERA of 0.00, allowing 7 hits and 1 walk and striking out 13 batters.
His most recent outing, on April 7, 2025, he came one out short of a complete game.
Greene is also just good against the Giants in his career in general. He has a 3-0 record with a 0.72 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 25 innings against the Giants. I’m sure hitters in San Francisco would be glad to have him on their side rather than have to face him.
Giants fans, would you like to see the team make a move for Hunter Greene?
