Todd Bowles Doesn’t Hold Back in Blunt Callout of Baker Mayfield

Todd Bowles didn’t mince words this week, and he didn’t hide where his frustration was aimed. 

As the Tampa Bay Buccaneers look ahead at a must-win showdown with the Carolina Panthers, the head coach publicly pointed to quarterback play as a core reason the season has unraveled. 

“We’ve got to be better at the quarterback position,” Bowles said Monday in reference to Baker Mayfield, via the team’s official transcript. 

“We’ve got to be better at the signal-calling position, and we’ve got to be better blocking it,” Bowles added. 

While Bowles attempted to spread responsibility across the offense, the message landed loudly and squarely on Baker Mayfield. 

With Tampa Bay’s playoff hopes hanging by a thread, Bowles’ blunt assessment stood out. 

It was one of the clearest moments of accountability he’s delivered during a stretch that has turned a once-comfortable NFC South lead into desperation. 

Baker Mayfield’s Continued Poor Play 

The numbers behind Mayfield’s recent stretch explain why Bowles chose this moment to call out his QB. 

Over Tampa Bay’s past eight games, the quarterback has thrown eight interceptions and lost two fumbles, with the Buccaneers losing seven of those contests. 

In Sunday’s 20-17 loss to the Miami Dolphins, Mayfield turned the ball over three times, including two interceptions and a lost fumble that continued a troubling trend. 

Mayfield has now thrown at least one interception in four consecutive games, tied for the longest active streak in the league. 

The split tells a major story. 

Tampa Bay is 7-1 when Mayfield does not throw an interception this season and 0-8 when he does. 

In Week 16 against Carolina, Mayfield threw a game-sealing interception late with the Buccaneers driving for a potential tying or winning score. 

That is another moment that looms large as the two teams prepare to meet again with the season on the line on Saturday. 

Bowles labeled the miscues simply as “mistakes,” but the repetition has turned them into a big reason for Tampa Bay’s collapse from a 6-2 start to a 7-9 record. 

Accountability or Deflection as Pressure Mounts? 

The timing of Bowles’ comments has sparked debate about intent. 

Is the head coach attempting to motivate his team through blunt honesty, or subtly shifting blame away from his own role in Tampa Bay’s collapse. 

Bowles insisted the locker room remains intact. 

“There’s no negativity inside the building,” he said. “There’s trust, there’s belief. We’ve got to play harder, we’ve got to play a lot better, we’ve got to coach a lot better.” 

Bowles did include himself and his staff in the criticism, acknowledging coaching failures alongside execution issues. 

Still, publicly calling out your $100 million quarterback is a very bold move. 

Saturday’s matchup against Carolina will determine whether Bowles’ message resonates or backfires. 

A win keeps Tampa Bay alive, but they’ll also need the Saints to knock off the Falcons on Sunday.

But for now, the Bucs will focus on what they can control and let the rest of the chips fall where they may. We will see if Bowles’ blunt callout of his franchise QB will pay dividend.
