Travis Kelce’s future in the NFL is surrounded by uncertainty, but this weekend he and fiancee Taylor Swift took some time to revisit his football past.
The Chiefs were eliminated from playoff contention with Sunday’s loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, which dropped them to 6-8. Kelce is now heading into the final three games of the season with no chance of playing in the postseason and no Patrick Mahomes, who suffered a season-ending injury in the loss.
Travis Kelce Visits an Important Figure From His Past
Before Kansas City’s game against the Chargers, Kelce took time to meet with his former high school coach, Jeff Rotsky.
Rotsky took to X this week to share a picture of their meeting and a message to Kelce.
“WATCHING & GETTING TO SPEND TIME WITH TRAVIS KELCE, HIS FAMILY, & 6 FORMER PLAYERS WAS AMAZING!” Rotsky captioned the post. “ANYONE WHO DOUBTED TRAV HAS BEEN PROVEN WRONG. SO PROUD OF HIM & HIS FUTURE!”
Swift could be seen in the background of the picture of Kelce and his former coach. The couple had met with Rotsky before, with the coach revealing that Swift had an interest in learning about his high school years.
“The first time we met, her opening line was, ‘I’ve been looking forward to meeting you, I want to hear all the dirt about Travis,’ ” Rotsky told The Times.
Rotsky said he could see potential in Kelce right away, telling his mother that he knew Travis would make it to the NFL one day.
“I remember at his graduation telling his mom, ‘your son’s going to play in the NFL one day and the only one that can stop Travis is Travis,’ ” Rotsky said.
Travis Kelce Nearly Skipped Playing College Football
Kelce was a highly recruited player coming out of high school and committed to join brother Jason Kelce on Cincinnati. But Travis Kelce almost skipped out, revealing in a 2023 interview that he was also given a scholarship offer to play basketball for legendary coach Bob Huggins at West Virginia.
But his dad, Ed Kelce, set Travis straight.
“I went to dad and I was like, ‘Man, I really want to play basketball at West Virginia under Huggs,’” Kelce said, via Talk Sport. “And he was like, ‘You’re a man of your [expletive] word. You don’t go back on your word. You already committed. Don’t be like these other guys.’
“Oh my gosh. I appreciate my dad for keeping me honest about my word.”
The decision paid off, with Kelce going on to have a stellar college career before being drafted by the Chiefs.
It’s not clear how much longer Kelce might play for the Chiefs. His contract is up at the end of this season, and Kelce has not said whether he will return to the NFL or head off to retirement. He reportedly decided to come back for 2025 after the disappointment of last year’s blowout loss in the Super Bowl, though this season is ending in more disappointment with the first year without the playoffs in more than a decade.
