The winner of the 2025 U.S. Open golf tournament will take home $4.3 million as part of a $21.5 million purse. The top prize and pool of money for the third major of the year remained the same as 2024. It is the largest purse among the major tournaments.
Sam Burns entered the final round on June 15 with a one-shot lead over Adam Scott. J.J. Spaun, Viktor Hovland, Tyrell Hatton and Carlos Ortiz also entered Sunday’s fourth round in contention for the win. Out of the top contenders entering play on Sunday, only Scott, the 2013 winner of The Masters had previously won a major championship.
The 2024 tournament was won by Bryson DeChambeau. The 2025 tournament is being played at the famed Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania.
“Yeah, it would be incredible. I think as a kid growing up, you dream about winning major championships and that’s why we practice so hard and work so hard,” Burns told reporters when asked what it would mean to win at the historic course. “All these guys in this field I think would agree that to have the opportunity to win a major is special. I’m definitely really excited for tomorrow.”
While the 28-year-old Burns entered Sunday looking for his first major championship victory, Scott, 44, was taking aim at a second major that would help cement his legacy as one of the top players of his era.
“It would be super fulfilling. Everyone out here has got their journey, you know. Putting ourselves in these positions doesn’t just happen by fluke. It’s not easy to do it. I really haven’t been in this kind of position for five or six years, or feeling like I’m that player. But that’s what I’m always working towards. It’s not that easy to figure it all out,” Scott told reporters. “But if I were to come away with it tomorrow, it would be a hell of a round of golf and an exclamation point on my career.”
