Unlikely Hero Is Set to Save Jets Run Defense Problems in 2025

The New York Jets need help with their run defense in 2025.

Enter undrafted free agent defensive tackle Fatorma Mulbah. He isn’t the hero Jets fans wanted, but perhaps he is the hero they needed.

The 6-foot-4, 304-pound behemoth “Had a lot of interest” from other teams following the conclusion of the 2025 NFL draft. However, he chose to sign with the Jets because of what his agent, Brett Tessler, described as a “perfect opportunity.”

The Power Shifts From the Teams to the Players

During the annual NFL draft, players hoping to hear their names called are at the mercy of the teams.

The teams control who gets picked and when. However, after the draft, there is a role reversal. All of a sudden, the players are the ones who have seized the power to choose which teams they sign with and for how much.

“The perfect opportunity” that Mulbah’s agent referenced is self-explanatory. Inexplicably, the Jets failed to select a defensive tackle at any point during April’s draft despite it being such a massive need for the team.

Mulbah’s agent, with that information, saw a clear path. With minimal obstacles in his way, Mulbah has a realistic path to making the 53-man roster.

This goes back to the power shifting to the players. During the draft, where you get selected as a player is out of your control. You could go to a good situation or a bad situation. However, when the draft is over, you can evaluate every opportunity and pick the one you believe gives you the best shot.

Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic ranked Mulbah as the fourth most likely UDFA to make the Jets roster this fall.

“Strangely, the Jets didn’t draft any interior defensive linemen in what was considered a deep class, which gives Mulbah (and another defensive tackle on this list) a real shot at sticking around. Mulbah (6-3, 309) graded out well as a run-stopper in 2024 — per PFF, he was 46th of 191 defensive tackles to play 400 snaps and 18th in tackling. He also had the seventh-most “stops” (27) among defensive tackles – which PFF qualifies as a tackle causing a ‘failure’ for the offense. Mulbah also has long arms (83-inch wingspan) and put up 28 bench-press reps at his pro day,” Rosenblatt revealed.

Jets Desperately Need Some Reinforcements on Defense

Mulbah has some interesting traits.

“Fatorma Mulbah is a DT prospect in the 2025 draft class. He scored a 9.06 RAS out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 192 out of 2022 DT from 1987 to 2025,” RAS.football posted on social media.

In RAS’s athletic testing, Mulbah graded out as at least good in every category and great in three categories: 32.50 vertical, 9’02” broad jump, and a 1.87 10-yard split.

Dylan Tereman broke down his All-22 film and explained why he has a very good path to making the roster based on his college tape.
