Vast Majority of Giants Fans Agree With Daboll Firing

New York Giants fans largely agreed with the team’s decision to fire Brian Daboll as head coach, with 89% of voters on a recent poll conducted by SBNation’s Big Blue View voting that the decision was indeed the correct move.

The Giants dropped a disappointing decision against the Bears 24-20 after leading 20-10 in the fourth quarter. It was the fourth blown double-digit lead for New York this season, which included a 33-32 loss to the Denver Broncos after the Giants led 19-0 after three quarters.

With Big Blue starting the season 2-8 for the third year in a row, the initial promise of the 9-7-1 2022 season wore off quickly. Although the head coach was instrumental in Jaxson Dart’s development, his repeated recklessness with Dart, the losses mounting, and Daboll tying himself to Shane Bowen despite the defense greatly underperforming sealed his fate.

Roughly Half of Giants Fans Believe Kafka Will Succeed

Later in the poll, voters were asked whether they thought Mike Kafka would succeed as the interim head coach for the Giants. The results were split nearly down the middle, with 49% of voters indicating that they believed Kafka would succeed, while the other 51% disagreed.

To be clear, defining success for Kafka would not include making the playoffs or finishing the season with a winning record. Fans would be happy to see competitive football, smarter roster decisions, roster decisions, and the defense making strides forward to end another disappointing year in the Meadowlands.

Early returns seem promising, with Kafka starting Jameis Winston over Russell Wilson, who has greatly struggled for the Giants whenever his number has been called. New York has also shored up the kicker position, signing Ben Sauls to their practice squad with Graham Gano headed back to injured reserve. Younghoe Koo was activated for the Packers game earlier today after going 2-2 on both field goals and extra points against the Bears.

44% of Fans Believe In The Franchise’s Direction

Forty-four percent of Giants fans believe that New York is headed in the right direction, a number that is up nearly twenty percent from the 26% who expressed confidence in the franchise’s direction just one week ago.

It is not that Giants fans do not want to believe in their team. By and large, New York football fans (including Jets supporters) are some of the most loyal in the country as they endure bad season after bad season at MetLife Stadium or from their couches every week.

But for the G-Men, the talent is there for much greater, and the Giants have drafted their quarterback of the future in Jaxson Dart. Costly injuries have derailed the offense, while poor scheming and coaching have resulted in a talented defense being unable to be effective as a unit.

Brian Burns has eleven sacks this season, while Kayvon Thibodeaux and Abdul Carter have been active in generating pressure and even stopping the run. The back seven has struggled with injuries, but sometimes Bowen’s soft coverages have ended up being the team’s biggest enemy.

Mike Kafka’s elevation to interim head coach may have sprung some optimism back into the hearts of Giants fans. But more wholesale changes should be sure to follow this offseason if New York wants to turn their glorious wins over the Chargers and Eagles into consistent success.
