Warriors’ Steph Curry Gets Honored Ahead of Hornets Game

For the only time this season, Steph Curry is back in Charlotte to face the Hornets on New Year’s Eve. Curry, who grew up in the Queen City, was honored once again a day before the Golden State Warriors visit the Hornets at the Spectrum Center.

On Tuesday, Curry returned to his alma mater of Davidson, which is around 25 minutes away from Charlotte. He was honored with his own highway exit named after him. The I-77 Exit 30 in North Carolina, which leads to Davidson College, is now called the Stephen Curry Interchange, as reported by The Charlotte Observer.

“This is my forever home… For me to be able to represent so many people that made this possible, I hope that that’s what they feel. A diploma is one thing. An elite achievement is another thing. This (sign) is another. I might be stealing the sign to take it home,” Curry said.

The four-time NBA champion played three seasons at Davidson, leading the Wildcats to the Elite Eight in 2008. He now serves as the assistant general manager of the basketball program, according to NBC Sports Bay Area.

Curry’s Charlotte Roots

It’s a well-known fact that Steph Curry was born in Akron, Ohio, the hometown of LeBron James. But Curry grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina, where his father, Dell Curry, spent the majority of his NBA career.

The two-time NBA MVP went to Charlotte Christian High School before becoming a national sensation at Davidson. After three years with the Wildcats, Steph was drafted No. 7 by the Golden State Warriors in the 2009 NBA draft.

It took him a few years to get settled in the Bay Area, shaking off early ankle issues before becoming one of the greatest players of all time. But his roots remain in Charlotte, and he always considered the city his home.

Steph faces the Charlotte Hornets for the only time this season and will look to give the Warriors another win.

In 17 games in his hometown, the four-time NBA champion is averaging 25.2 points, 4.7 rebounds, 6.2 assists and 1.5 steals. The Warriors enter Wednesday’s game on a five-game win streak against the Hornets dating back to December 27, 2022.

Curry Never Ruled Out Suiting Up For The Hornets

Speaking to the Charlotte Observer back in 2022, Steph Curry was asked about the possibility of playing for the Hornets in the final years of his legendary NBA career. Curry wants to represent the Warriors for the entirety of his career, but he didn’t rule out suiting up his father’s former colors.

“The curiosity around what it would be like to play for your hometown, what it’d be like to live in Charlotte, to possibly set up roots and all that? You think about it for sure. … The curiosity of like, ‘What would it be like to wear No. 30 in Charlotte like my pops?’” Steph said, via CBS Sports.

Steph has less than two years left in his contract with the Warriors. He can be an unrestricted free agent after the 2026-27 NBA season at the age of 39.
