Why are 48 teams taking part this year?

FIFA made the decision to expand the tournament from 32 sides to 48 in order to allow more countries to access the biggest stage in football.

The governing body was particularly interested in seeing more teams from Africa, Asia, North America and Oceania competing in the competition, with FIFA arguing that World Cup participation can help to grow the game in countries where the sport is less-developed.

The additional 16 teams means there are now 12 World Cup groups instead of the customary eight, with the 24 group winners and runner-ups joined by the eight best third-placed sides in the Round of 32.

Who is the favourite to win?

Spain, who head into the tournament as European Champions having beaten England in the Euro 2024 final, are favourites to win the World Cup for the second time in their history.

La Roja head to North America on an incredible unbeaten run, having not lost a game – a penalty shootout defeat aside – since 2023.

France have also been tipped for a deep run, with Les Blues winning the World Cup in 2018 and then finishing as runner-up in 2022.

England are the third favourites, with the Three Lions looking to end their long wait for their second World Cup title – exactly 60 years after their first.

South American heavyweights Brazil and Argentina round out the top five with the bookmakers, ahead of the likes of Portugal, Germany and Netherlands.
