Catch up on all of the latest WTA Wimbledon action with Heavyâs day four recap & highlights.
Friday’s WTA Wimbledon action delivered fireworks, with World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and local favorite Emma Raducanu playing a sensational headliner on Centre Court.
Raducanu, who entered the tournament ranked No. 40 in the world, went blow-for-blow with Sabalenka in the first set, winning some spectacular points while showing composure in some high-pressure moments. Despite that, Sabalenka edged out a 14-point tiebreak to claim the set, showing once again why she’s the best player in the world.
In the second, Sabalenka was able to build on the momentum, doubling up on Raducanu’s winners throughout the set, en route to a 7-6, 6-4 win.
The win secures Sabalenka a spot in the Round of 16, where she will now collide with Elise Mertens, who upset No. 14 seed Elina Svitolina on Court 1 today.
Mertens has been on a bit of a tear so far at SW19, dropping just one set through the first three rounds of play as the World No. 23 looks to win her first singles grand slam.
Madison Keys and Naomi Osaka Come Up Short on Court 2
Elise Mertens’ big win over Elina Svitolina wasn’t the only upset of the day on the WTA side of the tournament.
On Court 2, World No. 6 and 2025 Australian Open winner Madison Keys was stunned by Laura Siegemund in straight-sets.
Keys struggled to find her rhythm throughout the match, double faulting four times in the first set while recording double the amount of unforced errors recorded by Siegemund. In the second, Keys’ serve found it’s target, however, the unforced errors continued to pile up, with the live-ranking World No. 8 finishing the match with 31 unforced errors to Siegemund’s 11.
Additionally, on Court 2, former World No. 1 Naomi Osaka was defeated by Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. After winning the first, Osaka wound up losing the next two sets 6-4, with the new live-ranking World No. 50 advancing to the Round of 16.
While the win secures Pavlyuchenkova a spot in the fourth round for the first time in nine years, the loss left Osaka heartbroken. While speaking with members of the press post-match, Osaka, who has never made it past the third round of Wimbledon, indicated she had nothing positive to say about her performance.
