There will be multiple players available for the New York Yankees to pursue, with Eugenio Suarez of the Arizona Diamondbacks at the top of that list. While Suarez recently addressed the rumors surrounding the Yankees, it’s possible that he could end up on another team, including the New York Mets.Â
When recently examining the situation for the slugger with 31 home runs before the All-Star break, Sportsnaut had looked at the possibility of the Yankees acquiring him.Â
However, they also noted that the Mets could be in a play.Â
Regarding the Yankees, however, they noted that the veteran is well-regarded as a clubhouse presence and the type of player the Yankees typically want to target. With their issues at third base throughout much of the campaign, it makes even more sense to value a player like Suarez.Â
âOne of the biggest holes in the New York Yankeesâ lineup this season has been at second base. Thatâs why the club designated DJ LeMahieu for assignment and moved Jazz Chisholm Jr. over to second. Now, Brian Cashman needs to find someone to fill the void at the hot corner. Itâs certainly not Oswald Peraza, who posted a .456 OPS in his first 148 at-bats this season…
âThe 33-year-old is also well regarded as a great clubhouse presence, which is something New York values. The added benefit for New York is that heâd require less prospect capital in a trade since heâs on an expiring contract,â they wrote.
Metsâ Roster Needs Ahead of the Deadline
While Suarez is clearly one of the New York Yankees’ top options, with many rumors suggesting that the Yankees have shown interest in him over the past few weeks to months, it’s also possible that the New York Mets could be interested in adding a third baseman.Â
When it came to the Mets’ side of things, Sportsnaut noted that the Mets could be looking to improve at third base, given that their options just simply haven’t done the job. Brett Baty and Mark Vientos havenât been viable options, and the Mets aren’t in a position where they can continue playing a young guy if they arenât going to produce.Â
âThe New York Mets have attempted to make it work at third base with their internal options. Thus far, theyâve been ârewardedâ with a .2348/.288/.388 triple-slash line and a .677 OPS since May 1. Thatâs simply not going to cut it for a team that is already sacrificing run production at catcher and in center field. Suarez is the best hitter available this summer among the Metsâ positions of need and itâs not particularly close. New York also has the young pitching that Arizona is reportedly looking for. Itâs a natural match and the added bonus for Steve Cohen would be keeping Suarez away from the Yankees,â they wrote.
Another New York Bidding War
Now, to suggest that the New York Mets have a better opportunity than the New York Yankees to land him might be unfair. However, if David Stearns wants a player, he typically finds a way to get a deal.Â
Despite that, the Yankees are in a position where they need to find a third baseman.Â
With Suarez being the best one on the market, it feels safer to say that he’ll end up in the Bronx over Queens.
