Yankees Announce Recently Released Pitcher Has Signed With New Team

After a disappointing stint with the Yankees, pitcher Allan Winans is continuing his career in Japan.

The 30-year-old has signed with the Seibu Lions of Nippon Professional Baseball, the Yankees announced Sunday.

Winans made three appearances for the Yankees last season to ugly results, turning in an 8.68 ERA in 9.1 innings.

Why Did the Yankees Release Allan Winans?

In three major league seasons between stints with the Braves and Yankees, Winans is 1-5 with a 7.48 ERA in 11 appearances (nine starts) spanning 49.1 innings. The right-hander has allowed a whopping 10 home runs while walking 15 and striking out 44.

Winans made one start as a Yankee last season, giving up four runs over 4.1 innings in a 6-1 loss to the Reds on June 23.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported Wednesday that the Yankees granted had Winans his release, allowing him to pursue playing opportunities in Japan. His departure opened a spot on the Yankees’ 40-man roster, which now sits at 36 players.

Winans was far more effective as a minor leaguer last season. In 21 games with the Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, he was 12-1 with a 1.63 ERA.

Now it’s off to Japan, where Winans will be paid far more handsomely than if he’d stayed stateside bouncing between Triple-A and the majors.

Why Did Allan Winans Sign in Japan?

Winans simply didn’t have the repertoire to be successful in the majors. His low-90s fastball is far below the average velocity for big leaguers, making him an ineffective option regardless of his role.

But with strong command and decent secondary offerings, Winans could find more success in Japan and even become a regular in the rotation.

There are plenty of failed big leaguers who have gone overseas and resurrected their careers. Winans, who has struck out 8.5 batters per nine innings in his minor league career, will presumably look to do the same.
