The New York Yankees were once again among baseball’s top teams in 2025. The Yankees finished the 2025 season with a 94-68 record, which was good enough for them to finish second in the American League East and get back into the playoffs.
The Yankees kicked off their postseason in the American League Wild Card series against the Boston Red Sox. After losing Game 1 of the series against the Red Sox by a 3-1 final score, the Yankees then won Games 2 and 3 to knock out their biggest rival.
Yet, unfortunately for the Yankees, things went downhill for them after they defeated the Red Sox. The Yankees faced off against the Toronto Blue Jays in the ALDS and were simply outmatched. The Blue Jays knocked out the Yankees in four games, winning the series 3-1. This included the Blue Jays scoring a combined 23 runs in the first two games of the series.
After a tough finish to the playoffs, the Yankees are now looking to boost their roster this offseason. They have been linked to multiple notable free agents, including Cody Bellinger, Kyle Tucker, and Bo Bichette. It is understandable, as the Yankees have high expectations for 2026, and signing any of these players would be huge for them.
However, based on a new report, the Yankees are now being linked to a very interesting under-the-radar free agent.
Yankees Named Potential Landing Spot for Utility Man Willi Castro
In a recent article for Bleacher Report, Zachary D. Rymer took a look at nine free agents with “huge buy-low upside.” Among the players Rymer discussed was utility man Willi Castro.
“As a defensive presence, though, there aren’t many players who can match the sheer usefulness of Castro. He can play all three outfield spots and three positions on the infield, leaving only first base, catcher and pitcher as positions he can’t be counted on to cover,” Rymer wrote about Castro.
With the Yankees needing a utility player who can play both the outfield and the infield, Rymer listed New York as a potential landing spot for Castro. It is understandable when looking at New York’s current roster, as he could be a very nice depth addition for them. This is especially so if he regains his 2024 All-Star form, when he had 12 home runs, 60 RBIs, and a .247 batting average in 158 games.
Yankees Will Have Competition for Castro’s Services
With Castro being a veteran player with a solid resume and capable of playing multiple positions, there is no question that he could be a solid fit for several teams. Because of this, Rymer also named the San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners as two clubs that could pursue Castro.
It would make sense for the Padres and Mariners to target Castro, as they are both playoff-caliber clubs that would benefit by bringing in a player who provides a bit of everything, like the seven-year veteran. Yet, Castro could also be a nice pickup for many other teams as well.
Nevertheless, it will be very interesting to see if the Yankees end up being the team that signs Castro from here.
