Yankees Make Major Announcement Just Before Weekend

The New York Yankees revealed some good news weeks before the MLB All-Star break. New York is getting some pitching help as the club looks to continue to stay atop the American League East.

On June 20, 2025, the Yankees made a key announcement about one of their veteran pitchers. Closing pitcher Luke Weaver appears to be back at full health after being on the 15-day injured list.

“Prior to tonight’s game, the Yankees reinstated RHP Luke Weaver (#30) from the 15-day injured list,” the Yankees detailed in a June 20, message on X.

Prior to being reinstated, Weaver last played on May 31, before sustaining a hamstring injury. Yankees fans widely reacted with excitement regarding the team’s good news.

“The people’s closer is back,” one person reacted.

“WEAVERS WORLD BABY,” another said.

“LET’S GOOOOOOOOO,” a fan added.

“Yes I’m so excited,” said another.

Yankees News: Luke Weaver’s Return Did Not Go as Planned But Should Provide Pitching Boost

Weaver’s return did not go quite as glowingly as the Yankees would have hoped. The pitcher gave up a home run as part of a performance where Weaver allowed two runs, two hits and a walk in less than an inning of work. New York lost to the Baltimore Orioles 5-3 in the June 20, matchup.

Prior to the injury, Weaver appeared in 25 games for the Yankees this season after playing in 62 matchups in 2024. Weaver has taken over as the Yankees closer with eight saves this season.

In addition to the Weaver news, the team also announced that Pablo Reyes has opted to become a free agent after being designated for assignment.

“On Wednesday, INF/OF Pablo Reyes elected free agency in lieu of accepting an outright assignment,” the Yankees revealed in a June 20, message on X.

Yankees Pitcher Luke Weaver on Health: ‘The Body Has Reacted (Well) Every Single Day’

It could take some time for Weaver to shake off the rust in an effort to return to form. As for Weaver’s health, the pitcher appears confident that the injury is behind him.

“The body has reacted [well] every single day,” Weaver said prior to his return, per ESPN. “We pushed it to the limits, and smartly.

“And it’s reacted very, very well and as good as I could’ve hoped for. So throwing hasn’t been delayed in any way and I feel ready to go tonight.”

The Yankees Plan to Use Both Luke Weaver & Devin Williams at Closer

After Weaver struggled against the Orioles, Yankees manager Aaron Boone admitted it could take Weaver some time before the pitcher does not show signs of rust. Boone plans to utilize both Weaver and Devin Williams in the closing pitcher role moving forward.

“On some nights, [Weaver] will be [the closer,]” Boone remarked prior to Weaver’s return, per MLB.com. “I kind of look at him and Devin like we have two elite guys [in the back end of the bullpen]. With how well Devin has been throwing the ball the last month, you pretty much are going to keep him to an inning.

“With Weav, he is kind of the fireman kind of guy. It’s a big spot in the seventh where you need to get an out, that will be kind of Weav’s role. On the nights where they are both available and we are in the eighth inning in a save situation, I will probably match it up to how I think they line up best with who is coming up in that situation.”
