Yankees Making Calls to Trade for Hot Corner Upgrade: Report

As the New York Yankees continue to navigate a midseason slide, the front office is working the phones in search of a third baseman, according to a report.

The Yankees have “started to make calls” ahead of the July 31 trade deadline, with Colorado Rockies infielder Ryan McMahon emerging as a potential target, Jon Heyman of the New York Post wrote on July 3.

Chisholm Wearing No. 13—But Not Feeling at Home at the Hot Corner

Jazz Chisholm Jr. has taken on the bulk of duties at third base in recent weeks, despite his clear preference to stay at second base. The 26-year-old switch-hitter is producing offensively with an .829 OPS over 56 games, but his move from the middle infield has been far from seamless.

“Everybody knows I’m a second baseman,” Chisholm told The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner on Tuesday. “Of course, I want to play second base, but whatever it takes to help the team win. If that’s what the team chooses, that’s what I gotta do.”

Chisholm’s honesty adds a layer of complexity to the Yankees’ infield shuffle. While he’s embraced the team-first mentality, it’s clear that the transition has been less than ideal.

“I’m playing every day, so it’s hard to be upset,” he added. “Yes, I know I’m a second baseman. Yes, I know I’m better at second base, but at the end of the day, I still have to play third. I just have to deal with it.”

LeMahieu’s Struggles Prompt Front Office Action

Veteran DJ LeMahieu, a former Gold Glove winner and three-time All-Star, has also seen time at third. However, his production at the plate has been lacking in 2025. Through 41 games, LeMahieu is slashing just .254/.333/.331, with only one home run.

With Chisholm out of position and LeMahieu underperforming, the Yankees have begun exploring external options. One name on their radar is Ryan McMahon, who was an All-Star in 2024 and has quietly built a reputation as one of the better defenders at the position.

According to Heyman, New York has reached out to the Colorado Rockies regarding McMahon’s availability. He currently ranks 8th among MLB third basemen with a 0.7 Defensive WAR, and he’s one of the few bright spots on a struggling Colorado roster.

Yankees Looking to Rebound in Tight Division Race

The Yankees sit at 48-38, tied with the Toronto Blue Jays for the top spot in the American League East. But the mood in the Bronx has shifted as the team has dropped 13 of its last 20 games. What once looked like a runaway division title now appears to be a dogfight through August and September.

The lack of stability at third base has become a focal point of concern, particularly with star slugger Aaron Judge continuing to carry the offense. Upgrading the hot corner—either by landing McMahon or another proven option—could help New York gain traction again down the stretch.

As for Chisholm, his flexibility has made him a valuable piece in a lineup full of moving parts. But his comments make it clear that second base remains his ideal home—something the Yankees will have to weigh as they shape their infield for the second half.
