Yankees Predicted to Trade Luis Gil to Mets in Stunning 1-for-1 Blockbuster

The New York Yankees could pull off a rare trade with the New York Mets in a stunning move.

The Yankees could look to upgrade their infield, especially if the team moves on from Jazz Chisholm Jr., which has been reported. Regardless, New York could look to acquire a third baseman.

With that, Yankees insider Pete Caldera of NorthJersey predicts New York will trade Luis Gil to the Mets for Mark Vientos.

“At the MLB trade deadline, the Yankees and Mets make a rare blockbuster deal, swapping Yanks starter Luis Gil for third baseman Mark Vientos,” Caldera wrote.

The proposed deal would be a blockbuster, but it does make sense for both sides. The Mets add some much-needed depth to their rotation while the Yankees get an infielder who can also add some offense to the lineup.

New York would acquire Vientos, who’s under team control through 2029. The infielder could platoon with Ryan McMahon and also could play first base if needed. Vientos hit .233 with 17 home runs and 61 RBIs with the Mets last season.

Gil is under team control through the 2029 season, so the Mets would have him as a middle-of-the-rotation arm for years to come. The right-hander was named AL Rookie of the Year in 2024 and had success last season, despite dealing with injuries. Gil finished the year going 4-1 with a 3.32 ERA in 11 starts.

It would be a rare Yankees-Mets trade, but on paper, the deal makes sense for both sides as it fills needs.

When Was The Last Yankees-Mets Trade?

The Yankees and Mets are heated rivals and don’t make trades with one another all that often.

The last major trade the two teams made was back in 2022. The deal saw the Mets trade middle reliever Miguel Castro to the Yankees for reliever Joely Rodríguez. However, the deal didn’t work out for either side.

The Castro-Rodriguez swap was the first time the teams completed a major trade in 18 years.

Although the teams don’t make many trades with one another, the Mets have been signing away some key players from the Yankees. In the past two offseasons, the Mets have inked Juan Soto, Clay Holmes, Devin Williams, and Luke Weaver.

New York Looking to Add Infield Help

The Yankees have had a quiet offseason, but that could soon change.

New York is looking to bring back Cody Bellinger, but the team is also looking to add an infielder. MLB insider Jon Heyman reported that the Yankees have even checked in on the free agent market of Bo Bichette.

“Three previously unreported teams have checked on superstar Bo Bichette: Yankees, Dodgers and Cubs,” Heyman wrote. “The Yankees and Cubs are fielding inquiries on their star 2B who are free agents after 2026 (Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Nico Hoerner).”

If the Yankees don’t sign Bichette, perhaps New York pursues the trade market, which is where Vientos comes in. The Mets are also open to trading Vientos, according to Will Sammon of The Athletic.

“The Mets are open to moving infielders Ronny Mauricio, Luisangel Acuña and Mark Vientos, league sources said,” Sammon wrote. “Those three players look redundant on the Mets’ roster. New York appears willing to give Brett Baty every chance to stick at third base after a solid defensive season and .748 OPS added up to a 2.3 fWAR. After adding Semien and Polanco to the infield mix, at second base and first base, respectively, there’s only so much time to go around.”

So, perhaps the Yankees do try and acquire Vientos to shore up their infield.
