1 killed, 2 wounded in gunfight outside Garfield Ridge business

A man was fatally shot and a man employed by a nearby business was wounded during a gunfight Friday night in Garfield Ridge.

Two men, ages 27 and 31, approached the employee outside the business in the 7000 block of West Archer Avenue when an argument broke out and there was an exchange of gunfire about 8 p.m., Chicago police said.

The 27-year-old suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to Loyola Medical Center in Maywood, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The employee, 28, who has a concealed carry license, was shot in the torso. He was listed in critical condition at the same hospital, police said.

The 31-year-old was shot in the leg and was in fair condition at the same hospital, police said. Area 1 detectives are investigating.

In a statement on Facebook, Ald. Marty Quinn (13th) said a local neighborhood watch group had alerted him to a change of ownership at the business, which he accused of violating the ward’s liquor license moratorium. He also said business license inspectors were in the business when the shooting took place.

“I immediately reported the business to the Chicago Police Department and business license inspectors to be investigated for violating the liquor license moratorium,” Quinn wrote. “I’m currently working closely with the zoning administrator to change the zoning and permanently shut this business down.”

Quinn said he would be encouraging residents to sign a petition to close the business at the Garfield Ridge Neighborhood Watch meeting on Tuesday.
