Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider delivered an emotional statement after seeing right-handed pitcher Cody Ponce carted off the field on Monday night with an injury just 47 pitches into his first major league start since October 3, 2021.
The defending American League champions lost the game to the Colorado Rockies 14-5, ending the Blue Jaysâ season-opening win streak after three games.
On Tuesday, the Blue Jays issued an update, saying that Ponce âsuffered a right ACL sprain, will miss significant time,â according to Sportsnet baseball reporter Shi Davidi.
The Blue Jays made several significant moves to solidify their pitching staff over the offseason, but perhaps the most surprising came in December when they gave the 31-year-old Ponce a three-year contract worth $30 million despite the fact that the 2015 Milwaukee Brewers second-round draft pick had not set foot on an MLB mound in more than four years.
After languishing in the minors for five seasons, Ponce finally made his debut in 2020 with the Pittsburgh Pirates. In two seasons with the Pirates, Ponce delivered an unimpressive 5.77 ERA and a 1-7 record in just 55 1/3 innings.
But it was when he went overseas to pitch first in Japan and then, in 2025, for the Hanwha Eagles of the Korean Baseball Organization, that âit all came together with a 1.89 ERA and 252 strikeouts over 180 2/3 innings, a stunning number in a league full of quality contact hitters,â wrote Blue Jays correspondent Keegan Matheson of MLB.com. âThat set a single-season strikeout record in the KBO â a remarkable season that included an 18-strikeout game in May â and earned him the league MVP Award.â
Now, Ponceâs future with the Blue Jays and in MLB is suddenly thrown into serious doubt.

Schneider Delivers Remarks on Ponce Injury
As Heavy.com reporter Charlie Wright described the scene, âPonce sprinted to the first-base line to field a ground ball off the bat of Jake McCarthy. As the righty reached down to scoop the grounder, he pulled up lame. Ponce crumpled to the ground on the infield dirt. He would leave the field on the medical cart, unable to walk off under his own power. The injury is being called right knee discomfort, according to the team.â
But the injury appeared to be more than mere âdiscomfort.â Ponce was scheduled to undergo an MRI exam on Tuesday to determine the nature and extent of his knee injury.
As the team and its fans awaited the results of that MRI, hoping for a positive update on the pitcherâs injury, Blue Jays manager John Schneider discussed the emotional impact of the Ponce injury less than three innings into his return to the major leagues.
âYou feel for him. The last couple of years and then getting back here, and he was throwing the ball really well,â Schneider said, as quoted by Matheson. âEven on the field, McCarthy was pretty cool and was apologizing to him. In real time, Cody was talking back to him. I just told him to focus one minute at a time. There was a lot of emotion that goes into today, and he was really excited. It just sucks to see that happen to him. Weâre wishing for the best.â
