The Cowboys‘ 24-21 comeback win over the Eagles, the defending champs and NFC East leaders, was for the most part a thing of beauty, a game in which Dallas was able to ride second-half momentum to an improbable win that might have saved their season. That’s true of any game at this point for the 5-5-1 Cowboys, who could have their narrow playoff chances dashed with any loss going forward.
But if there was a nagging takeaway from the Cowboys’ perspective on Sunday, it was the sudden lack of reliability from star receiver CeeDee Lamb, who began the season with four drops against the Eagles in the opener and had trouble hanging onto the ball again, with 11 targets and just four catches. The final numbers were not in, but it appeared that at least two (probably three) of those attempts will go down as drops.
Lamb’s frustration showed frequently on the sideline. After the game though, quarterback Dak Prescott said it was important for Lamb to keep his focus and bounce back.
Cowboys’ Prescott Still Backing CeeDee Lamb
Prescott was asked about Lamb’s performance in the Cowboys’ postgame press conference.
“He is a guy who expects to make a lot of plays. And when he is not making themâtrust me, I have had games where I felt that exact same way,” Prescott said. “So for me, it is about, donât press. Letâs not ride the highs and the lows. Even if you have had a bad play or whatever it might be, let it go. Youâre a hell of a player and you know it. Yeah, he made great plays and big plays, got the PI, would have been a touchdown, right after that.”
CeeDee Lamb Should Avoid ‘Pressing’
For the season, Lamb has tallied 632 yards on 44 catches in eight games. He missed two games for the Cowboys with an injury, and he has been overshadowed by fellow star receiver George Pickens. But Lamb is still on pace for 1,106 yards this year.
Prescott does not want Lamb to “press.”
“When you press, and I have seen CeeDee do it, youâre not gonna get the best version of yourself,” Prescott said. “I am the same way. For me, when I see him getting into that position, it is just about talking to him. He did a good job of responding and staying with it and making the plays he needed to make for us to ultimately win this game.
“Heâs a hell of a player. He is gonna get frustrated when he is not making the plays he expects to make. But he will make those. He will make those. Some adversity tonight but we have seen it before, and we have seen the way that he responds. So, I look forward to him responding.”
Cowboys Will Keep the Ball ‘Coming His Way’
In his press conference, Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer repeated his confidence in Lamb putting the dropped passes behind him.
âCeeDee is not a good player,â Schottenheimer said. âHeâs an incredible player. I think the biggest thing for CeeDee is to know we love him, we trust him, the ball is going to keep coming his way.
âThere are some weeks you have great games and other weeks where youâre like, âHey, I didnât play as good as I can play,â but when we start drawing plays for Kansas City â Iâll give them a heads up â there will be a lot going to No. 88.â
