Howie Roseman gave fans of the Philadelphia Eagles anxiety with his roster manuevering this week.
Roseman had waived veteran long snapper Charley Hughlett on Monday, which appeared to leave them without a full-time long snapper ahead of their regular-season finale Sunday against the Washington Commanders.
Yet, according to Hughlett’s agent, Brett Tessler, the Eagles had re-upped the veteran to their practice squad Tuesday.
Hughlett spent much of the season on injured reserve with an abdominal injury but has long snapped in each of the past two games. He signed a one-year contract with the Eagles in the offseason after spending 10 seasons snapping for the Cleveland Browns.
The Eagles Briefly Did Not Have A Long Snapper On Their Roster
Eagles fans should, by now, know there is a method to Roseman’s madness and trust the process. But there are points where sometimes the vision is not available to fans.
So the fact the Eagles announced they had cut their only long snapper, on either the active roster or practice squad, surely caused some anxiety amid the City of Brotherly Love — especially since Hughlett had done nothing wrong in his handful of games long snapping.
“[The] 14-year vet is one of the top long snappers in the league and has been with them since the start of the season,” Tessler posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday.
Yet, it evidently was Roseman’s plan all along to simply shift Hughlett from the active roster to the practice squad in order to open up a spot on the 53-man roster for Week 18.
Zach Berman of The Athletic explained the reason for the move, which ended up being little more than a clerical move, yet opened up a spot for either safety Andre’ Sam or linebacker Patrick Johnson.
“This maneuver could be a way for the Eagles to add a player to the 53-man roster ineligible for elevation,” Berman shared on X (formerly Twitter). “Andre’ Sam and Patrick Johnson would both need to be on the 53[-man roster] to play in a game.”
The Eagles Have Something To Play For Sunday
The Eagles won the Super Bowl as the No. 2 seed in the NFC in 2024-25 and have the opportunity to take over that spot with a win and a Chicago Bears loss to the Detroit Lions on Sunday. The Bears, of course, hold the tiebreaker by virtue of their 24-15 win at Lincoln Financial Field on Nov. 28
Both the Bears game and the Eagles game will be happening concurrently, and a Bears win would drop Philadelphia to the No. 3 spot — and a likely rematch with the Los Angeles Rams in the wild-card round.
The Eagles, of course, rallied to knock off the Rams 33-26 after trailing by 19 points in the first half at Lincoln Financial Field on Sept. 21. The Eagles also held off the Rams in the divisional round, 28-22, in the snow at the Linc in 2025.
A win and Bears loss, and the Eagles would host the Green Bay Packers in the wild-card round for the second straight year. Philadelphia beat Green Bay 22-10 in last year’s wild-card game, and the Eagles have already defeated the Packers, 16-9, on Nov. 10.
