East Bay police sergeant on site of one crash injured in another one

ANTIOCH — A man suspected of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol collided with an Antioch police car early Friday, sending a sergeant to the hospital, police said.

The driver also was hospitalized in the crash that happened just before 2 a.m. at the intersection of A Street and W. 10th Street. Both the police sergeant and the suspect have been released and are expected to recover.

Lt. Joe Njoroge in a statement said police arrested the 31-year-old driver on suspicion of DUI.  Njoroge said the driver also was speeding before the crash. Jail records did not list him in custody on Friday afternoon.

According to Njoroge, officers were at the intersection because of an earlier crash that happened about 1 a.m. Patrol officers were on the roadway and positioned to provide traffic control while the investigation into the early crash was ongoing.

The driver then crashed into the driver’s side of the patrol vehicle. Njoroge said officers at the scene and fire personnel from the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District assisted the sergeant out of his vehicle and the driver out of his.
