We’re only a week into I’m A Celebrity…South Africa, but there’s already beef brewing in camp.

The creepy-crawly reality show has brought back 12 campmates from the main series, each in the hopes of being crowned the ‘ultimate legend’.

Billed as a second chance at glory, former boxer David Haye might not have got that memo, since so far all he’s done is rub his campmates up the wrong way.

The 45-year-old popped his foot in his mouth once again on Monday night when he unspooled his half-baked theory about something he dubbed ‘ugly duckling syndrome’.

The less said about his musings, the better, but they did not go unchallenged, with Beverley Callard, 69, saying in the Bush Telegraph: ‘I’ve never heard anything so sexist in my life. Where is this coming from?’

Gogglebox alum Scarlett Moffat also said to the ITV cameras: ‘Sometimes David says things and I know what he’s saying, but the way that he says it, it just goes down like a lead balloon.’

David aired his theory that attractive women have poor personalities, while ‘ugly’ (his word) women have to work on their personalities to have something to offer. The Corrie star labelled it ‘complete claptrap.’

Speaking about how women are treated differently at the door of a club based on their looks, he said: ‘I’ve watched it with my own eyes. It’s horrible. I feel terrible for these girls.’ He then added: ‘She’s the one normally driving as well.’

The camp descended into astounded hysterics, while David held a small shovel and said he was digging himself a bit of a hole.

‘David Haye’s vile behaviour exposes I’m A Celebrity’s fatal flaw’

‘[David] quickly expressed his total lack of respect for anyone he believes won’t be winning as many stars as possible. For him, being a reliable star winner is subject to physical strength, which is often completely irrelevant on the show.

‘Unlike the main series, the South Africa spin-off is pre-recorded. The celebs are able to watch themselves back with the rest of the public and view their actions from the same perspective as viewers.

‘But it means we have absolutely no power to punish him with relentless voting for a Bushtucker Trial – sending a direct message: we’ve seen how you’ve disregarded such a wonderful human being, and this is how we feel about it.

‘Now eat a cow’s anus.’

The conversation concluded with his campmates praising David’s partner, Sian Osborne, whom he’s been dating since 2020.

Beverley then joked: ‘He has hit the jackpot, but his partner has got the booby prize, that’s for sure.’

ITV viewers at home applauded Beverley for her rebuffs, labelling the star ‘brilliant’ on social media.

Lexie Ashmore wrote: ‘Someone tell David he ain’t all that! Beverley is right, his partner has the booby prize,’ while Bethan urged her to ‘drag him’.

I’m A Celebrity…South Africa airs weeknights on ITV1 at 9pm and is available to stream on ITVX.
