Now, he’s opening up like never before about his extraordinary life.
Dustin Hoffman’s Life-Spanning Memoir
Dustin Hoffman’s memoir is titled “Look at Me.” The book’s editor, Jonathan Karp, told PEOPLE, â’Look at Me’Â has the same qualities so many of us have enjoyed in Dustin Hoffman’s films. It is full of artistry, passion, character, and wit.â
An Amazon description of the book reads as follows: “‘Look at Me’Â is both an intimate account of Dustin Hoffmanâs work as an actor, collaborating with the greats of the last six decadesâMike Nichols, Gene Hackman, Meryl Streep, Robert Redford, Barbra Streisand, Lawrence Olivier, Steve McQueen, Anne Bancroftâin era-defining films, and a profound contemplation of mortality by a person entering his nineties and looking back on a remarkable life. (Hoffman was slated to be the failure in his family…he even failed at that).”
“Fans will finish this book feeling that they truly know Hoffman: the way his mind works; how he prepares for a part; his experience growing up in Los Angeles as a lower middle-class Jewish kid in the 1940s, then arriving in New York City full of passion in the late 50s, only to find himself crowned the ‘voice of his generation’ in Life magazine by the end of the 60s.”
The description concludes, “In the decades since, Hoffman has shown his brilliance and breadth in some of the most iconic movies of the Twentieth Century. In his memoir, he proves to be an ardent, entertaining, and deeply empathic storyteller. A narrator whose company you will relish.”
Dustin Hoffman is One of the ‘Greatest Actors of His Generation’
In a biographical profile by the American Film Institute, Dustin Hoffman was celebrated for his lasting contributions to the film industry. Additionally, for more than 60 years, he has brought to life some of the most iconic characters in movie history, earning a reputation for his versatility and depth as an actor.
GettyThe AFI wrote, “Three decades ago, it seemed impossible to see Dustin Hoffman as a leading man. Today, itâs hard to look at him and think of him as anything else. Dustin Hoffman is perhaps the consummate leading man. Both a Hollywood star and one of the great actors of his generation.”
Additionally, the actor won two Oscars for his stellar acting talents in the category of Best Actor. He was subsequently honored for his roles in the 1979 film “Kramer vs. Kramer” and 1989’s “Rain Man.”
In his 1989 acceptance speech, Hoffman shared a poignant story about his father’s illness. Thus, he forgot to thank his “Rain Man” co-star and director. He rectified that later in the evening while presenting the Best Actress award with Tom Cruise. “In my nervousness, I left out the director’s name [Barry Levinson], and I left out Tom’s name. Tom, thank you very much. I love you very much.”
Dustin Hoffman is best known for the films “All the President’s Men,” “Rain Man,” “Midnight Cowboy,” “Kramer vs. Kramer,” “Lenny,” “Tootsie,” and “Hook,” to name a few of his most famous standout cinema moments. He is married to Lisa Hoffman, and together they share four children.
