Sabrina Carpenter well and truly raised the bar with her second weekend at Coachella, bringing fans to a standstill as the one and only Madonna made a surprise appearance.
However, the audience is facing the wrath of social media due to seemingly lacklustre reactions.
The Espresso hitmaker, 26, headlined the annual California dessert festival for the first time this year, joining fellow headliners Justin Bieber and Karol G.
Last weekend, the Grammy-winning pop star wowed the crowd by transforming the stage into sets of various blockbusters in what she dubbed ‘Sabrinawood.’ With numerous outfit changes, full-on choreography, and a setlist comprising all her hits, from Feather to Manchild, Sabrina undoubtedly delivered.
And while you may think she couldn’t possibly top cameos from Susan Sarandon, Will Ferrell, and Samuel L. Jackson, she couldn’t resist one more opportunity to send the internet into a frenzy for weekend 2.
In a shock Coachella comeback, music legend Madonna, 67, made a dramatic entrance towards the end of Sabrina’s set, 20 years after her own headline slot.
Midway through Sabrina’s Juno, the background music unexpectedly shifted to the instrumental of Madonna’s hit Vogue as she rose to the stage on a platform.
Madonna was assisted down the stairs by dancers as they duetted on the 1990 banger, going on to sing 1989’s Like A Prayer in what can only be described as a spiritual moment.
But the surprises didn’t end there, as Sabrina and Madonna also gave fans a teaser of a new song from the Queen of Pop’s upcoming album, Confessions II, a sequel to 2005’s Confessions On A Dance Floor, which she confirmed on Wednesday.
It’s only correct to say that both artists looked incredible, strutting down the stage catwalk in stunning costumes. While Sabrina wore a white lace bodysuit with silver ballet pumps, Madonna rocked a lavender ensemble complete with corset, stockings, and knee-high boots.
Never one to shy away from a racy look, having become famous for her saucy Instagram photoshoots, Madonna completed her outfit with matching gloves and stylish shades.
While the internet continues to process the enormity of what just happened in the Coachella Valley, those in attendance have found themselves scolded for failing to greet Madonna with screams and cheers.
Taking to X after watching the set via a YouTube stream, @_contemptressx raged: ‘the way i’m s****ing bricks at the fact that sabrina carpenter played with f***ing MADONNA at coachella and everyone in the crowd is just robotically standing in place holding their phones like HELLO?!?!? next time give the tickets to people who deserve them thanks’.
‘i hate the crowd of coachella cause WDYM sabrina brought out THE MADONNA and they were basically silent’, wrote @lolngel.
‘the Sabrina crowd last night when Madonna was so dead like WHAT and for the love of god put your phones down for just a second’, begged @andysopalitesky.
@fearlessfreaak said they would ‘cry’ if they were there in-person when Madonna appeared, while @samanfsx even wondered: ‘that coachella crowd defo didn’t know who madonna was??? LOL’.
Nevertheless, fans online are showering the Hung Up songstress with endless praise, as @vigiIantechris declared the duet ‘legendary’ and @badreputationd was ‘gagged’.
Speaking onstage, 5ft 4 Madonna joked that it was the first time she had performed with someone ‘shorter’ than her, as Sabrina is 5ft.
‘Thank you so much for inviting me on your show,’ she said, to which Sabrina replied: ‘No thanks needed, Madonna. You can have whatever you want.’
In a moment of reflection, Madonna also said: ’20 years ago today, I performed at Coachella. I was in the dance tent, and it was the first time I performed Confessions On A Dance Floor: Part I in America, and that was such a thrill for me.
‘So you can imagine what a thrill it is for me to be back 20 years later… so it’s a, like, a full circle moment, you know? Very meaningful for me.’
‘Thank you for giving me that experience,’ she added to Sabrina.
It was a starry affair from beginning to end last night, as Sabrina also welcomed Thelma & Louise actress Geena Davis and White Chicks star Terry Crews for brief appearances.
She closed the show with a real spectacle, performing her single Tears and rising onto a seat from a car as water gushed out from fountains around her and her dancers.
