INGLEWOOD — The Rams made a move for the future on Thursday, selecting Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson with the 13th overall pick in the NFL draft.
Simpson completed 64.5% of his passes in 2025, throwing for 3,567 yards, 28 touchdowns and five interceptions. It was his only season starting in college, having attempted just 50 passes in his first three seasons at Alabama.
The Rams are bringing back reigning league MVP Matthew Stafford, but they do not have a clear backup behind him for the 2026 season with free agent Jimmy Garoppolo reportedly considering retirement. So Simpson will be asked to back up Stafford and serve as the scout team quarterback in 2026.
And with Stafford entering the final year of his contract, Simpson will study under him for at least one season with the idea of eventually succeeding the 38-year-old.
More to come on this story.
