As the investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie approaches the three month mark, the friends and family of the kidnapping victim are still very much still in the dark. Law enforcement investigators have not been able to identify the suspect in the case or locate Nancy Guthrie after she was abducted from her home in Tucson, Arizona.
The lack of publicly available information has not stopped speculation about who is responsible for the crime and several people immediately pointed the finger at Tommaso Cioni. The brother-in-law of Savannah Guthrie and husband to Annie Guthrie, Cioni is believed to be one of the last people to see Nancy Guthrie, making him a prime suspect in the early parts of the investigation.
Now, a retired FBI agent has given their opinion on Cioni and why he is unlikely to be involved in the kidnapping.
Jennifer Coffindaffer Explains Why Tommaso Cioni is Not Involved in Kidnapping Case
Speaking in a video posted to her own personal X account, former FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer explained why she believes people pointing the finger at Cioni is “absurd” and that his appearance may have played a role in his targeting.Â
According to Coffindaffer, Cioni is Italian but has been living in the United States for two decades. He married Annie Guthrie in 2006 and works as a teacher.
âTommaso looks the part. I swear to goodness, I think that that is a big reason why people just want to blame Tommaso,â she said. âSome people might think he looks really handsome, like his wife, Annie. And some people might think he looks ominous. He has an ominous look about him.â
Coffindaffer also addressed reports that Cioni has a similar build and look to the man captured in surveillance video taken from Nancy Guthrie’s home.
âItâs so absurd to me. But nevertheless, people want to say that thatâs a factâthat heâs Porch Guy,â she explained. âThere is no physical corroboration when you look at porch guyâs face that we can see, when you look at porch guyâs mannerisms, when you look at how he walks compared to Tommaso. Thereâs nothing there to compare.â
âPeople want to say that he is involved becauseâand literally this is all they haveâbecause he was the last to see Nancy,â Coffindaffer continued. âWell, letâs be clear. He was not the last to see Nancyâ¦No, porch guy, minimally, and others were the last to see Nancy alive.â
She added, âWhy would Tommaso Cioni, who was her caretaker, who saw her often, all of the timeâthey had these Sunday dinners togetherâwhy? Thereâs just nothing for them to gain.â
Former SWAT Commander Bob Krieger Reveals Terrain Problems in Investigation
Meanwhile, a former Pima County SWAT Commander who has knowledge of the local area has revealed some of the difficulties that investigators will experience due to the difficult terrain.
Bob Krieger explained that the area around Nancy Guthrie’s home is remote and rugged, making it difficult to conduct effective searches.
âTucson is surrounded by mountains in each direction. And once you get on, essentially, the back side of any of those, thatâs where the remoteness starts,â Krieger explained. âThe biggest area, geographically, is going out to the west and out there is where we encounter a lot of activity from, you know, smuggling of all sorts â whether it be humans or drugs, things like that, to violent crimes, to, you know, body disposals.â
He added, âThereâs just a ton of stuff going on out there, and itâs just so vast. And a lot of times, you know, you just canât find what youâre looking for, even if you have very specific locations.â
âSome of the roads when I used to work out here, they were like super highways for criminal activity. This little track here will take you 100 miles south and get you to Mexico if you want.â
