Angelina Jolie’s Film ‘Couture’ Mirrors Her Personal Health Journey

Angelina Jolie is stepping back onto the big screen with a role that hits especially close to home.

In her upcoming drama “Couture,” the Oscar-winning actress takes on a story that mirrors a deeply personal chapter of her own life. Jolie plays Maxine, a filmmaker working during Paris Fashion Week who receives a life-changing breast cancer diagnosis in the middle of her career demands. The film blends high fashion with an emotional storyline, following Maxine as she navigates both her professional responsibilities and her health.

In the trailer, her character reflects on the unexpected nature of the diagnosis, saying, “You spend life preparing for all these things to happen… And then the thing you never saw coming, there it is,” according to Entertainment Weekly. The moment sets the tone for a story centered on resilience, uncertainty and moving forward.

A Story That Hits Close to Home

The role carries added weight for Jolie because of her own health journey. In 2013, she revealed she carries the BRCA1 gene mutation, which significantly increased her risk of developing breast cancer. She made the decision to undergo a preventive double mastectomy, reducing her risk from 87 percent to under 5 percent. At the time, she shared, “I can tell my children that they don’t need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer.” 

She later underwent additional preventive surgery in 2015 to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes.

Jolie has continued to speak openly about her experience and how it shaped her perspective. Reflecting on that decision, she said, “My scars are a choice I made to do what I could do to stay here as long as I could with my children,” adding, “I love my scars because of that.”

That personal connection made “Couture” feel different from her previous work. She described the project as “personal” and admitted, “I felt very vulnerable” while filming, per InStyle. She also noted how intimate the experience was, saying, “It felt so private that in my mind, it’s probably the one film that doesn’t feel like a film.”

A Journey of Strength, Identity and Moving Forward

Beyond the diagnosis itself, “Couture” explores a broader emotional journey. The film follows Maxine as she navigates relationships, including a romance in Paris, while connecting with women from different backgrounds who are also facing personal challenges. The story centers on self-discovery and the choices that shape a person’s life.

Jolie also drew from her family’s experience, particularly her mother’s battle with cancer. During filming, she wore one of her late mother’s necklaces for comfort, adding another personal layer to the role. She has spoken about how illness can sometimes define how others see a person, recalling her mother once saying, “All anybody ever asks me about is cancer.”

Jolie shared a message that reflects the heart of the film, encouraging people to see beyond a diagnosis. “If you know someone who is going through something, ask them about everything else in their life as well… they’re a whole person,” she said, according to People.

Directed by Alice Winocour, “Couture” also stars Louis Garrel, Ella Rumpf and Vincent Lindon. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2025 and is set to hit theaters on June 26.

At its core, the project blends Jolie’s personal experiences with a story about resilience and identity, offering a look at how people continue to move forward even in the face of uncertainty. As Jolie put it, “They’re a whole person and they’re still living.”
