Teen’s body found shot, bound after mom got call that he’d been kidnapped on South Side, police say

The mother of an 18-year-old man got a terrifying call from Venezuela: Her son had been kidnapped, the caller said, and here’s where to find him.

Tuesday night, police found his body, according to a Chicago police report.

Police issued a statement saying officers responding to a request for a well-being check went to an apartment in the 6800 block of South Perry Avenue about 9 p.m. Tuesday. There, they found Cristian Jose Rojas Barrios, who’d been shot in his chest and leg, lying face-down in a bathtub with his hands tied behind his back, the report said. Three 9 mm shell casings were found near his body. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the police report, Rojas Barrios’ mother didn’t know the person who called from Venezuela. That caller said her son had been kidnapped about 3 p.m. Monday near a basketball court in the 7100 block of South King Drive and could be found inside an apartment at the Perry Avenue address.

An autopsy Wednesday determined Rojas Barrios died of multiple injuries from an assault, and his death was ruled a homicide, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Area 1 detectives were investigating.
