The immediate future of Pasadena Unified School District athletics after a year of cutbacks headlines the Board of Education’s Thursday, June 11, special meeting.
Last fall, the board approved a package of $24.5 million in cuts to school based services, contracts and the central office, which will be reflected in the upcoming 2026-2027 fiscal year budget. On Thursday, the board will receive presentations on the budget and open the public hearing ahead of approval, which is expected later this month.
The future of the district’s athletic programs became a point of contention during discussions about where and how much to cut. At its Nov. 20 meeting, the Board of Education voted to cut athletic expenditures by 25%, proportional to each school site’s enrollment. Trustees went against the staff recommended cuts to athletics that would have gone farther.
Thursday’s meeting had initially been planned to be another public hearing on an equity impact analysis report regarding potential school mergers, but was scrapped when trustees voted 6-1 to not accept the report halting the months long process.
The expected approval of the budget at the Thursday, June 25, meeting will bring to a close yet another tumultuous year in the district that included another round of teacher and staff layoffs as well as the aforementioned failed consolidation consideration saga.
Trustees are expected to vote Thursday on terminating the agreement with Total School Solutions, the third-party consultant the district contracted with to lead the consolidation exploratory process.
Thursday’s meeting begins at 5 p.m. and will be streamed live on the KLRN Pasadena YouTube channel.
