Two people suspected of trying to rob undercover agents during a firearms trafficking operation were shot by a Chicago police officer and federal agents Tuesday evening in southwest suburban Country Club Hills.
The injured suspects as well as three others were taken into custody but charges have not been announced.
The incident unfolded around 5:30 p.m., when a special agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and a Task Force Officer discharged their firearms in response to an attempted armed robbery of undercover agents during a firearms trafficking operation in the 18800 block of Loretto Lane, according to an ATF spokesperson.
Both suspects’ conditions had stabilized at hospitals, where they were taken in critical condition and also placed under arrest. A law enforcement officer was taken to a hospital for observation as well.
Three additional offenders were apprehended at the scene, the spokesperson said.
In a preliminary internal notification, the police department said a CPD officer detailed to a gang investigations unit operating in the suburb shot at least one of the two suspects were shot.
Police said the shooting happened around 7:30 p.m. and did not immediately respond to a request for comment about why ATF had an earlier time.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability, which investigates shootings involving Chicago police officers, released the statement confirming an investigation. The agency did not have a comment. Country Club Hills police and fire departments also did not respond to requests for comment.
The FBI and Illinois state police were also assisting with the investigating, the ATF said.
Shortly after 8 p.m., a Sun-Times photographer saw the FBI hand over a woman in handcuffs to Country Club Hills police.
