Edouard Mendy will not be involved tonight as Senegal take on Iraq in their final World Cup group stage match.

The African nation have lost both their group matches so far this summer, beaten by France and Norway.

It means their hopes of qualifying for the last 32 stage of the competition are very slim – but not impossible.

A huge win against Iraq this evening could still leave them in contention to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition as one the eight best third place teams.

But they will be attempting it without no1 goalkeeper Mendy.

The former Chelsea goalkeeper was replaced by Mory Diaw in the 63rd minute of the 3-2 defeat to Norway and tests this week confirmed that the 34-year-old will be unable to participate tonight.

‘The Senegalese Football Federation inform the public that goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has sustained an injury to his left knee during the match between Senegal and Norway on Monday,’ Senegal confirmed.

‘Following the initial medical examinations undertaken by the national team’s medical staff, the player is declared to be unavailable for Senegal’s next match.

‘The appropriate care as well as complementary medical examinations are currently being undertaken in order to evaluate with precision the nature of the injury and determine whether he will be able to participate further in the competition.

‘The Senegalese Football Federation address to Edouard Mendy our wishes for his swift recovery and hope to see him soon on the pitch.’
