The athletes took practice runs on Monday, familiarizing themselves with the track ahead of Saturday’s regional finals.
Warming up, they really put on the speed, their legs pumping, their ears and tongues flapping in the wind.
At Saturday’s 29th annual Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals, the Fastest Wiener in the West will be decided. The cutest will be harder to determine.
The races hosted at the Los Alamitos Race Course are a fundraiser for the Seal Beach Animal Care Center. Since 1996, organizers said the races have raised nearly $300,000 for the animal shelter.
The dachshunds races are set to start around 6 p.m. — the 14 heats are held in between the track’s live horse racing — and the championship race is expected to happen about 9:15 p.m. Organizers suggest arriving between 5 and 5:30 p.m. to secure good seating.
Admission is $3 for adults, free for those 17 and younger. Information: losalamitos.com
