Powerful earthquake rocks Japan sparking one-metre tsunami warning

A tsunami warning has been issued after a 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck southern Japan.
The tremors, which were felt on Kyushu at a depth of 10 kilometres below the sea surface, reached the highest level on the country’s seismic intensity scale, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said.
Following the earthquake, authorities have issued a tsunami warning, with waves of up to one meter (3.28 feet) expected.
Residents in coastal areas have now been urged to move to higher ground and follow evacuation instructions.
Meanwhile, Japanese public broadcaster NHK said that waves of up to that level may already have been recorded.
So far, earthquake warnings for Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Fukuoka, Saga, Oita, and Miyazaki prefectures, which are all on Japan’s southern Kyushu island, have been issued by the government.
