The longest Lego set ever made is a gigantic new Star Wars Super Star Destroyer

Christmas must be coming, as Lego has unveiled its big new Star Wars set for this autumn and it’s a colossal recreation of Darth’s Vader personal Star Destroyer.

For some fans the problem with Lego is not that it’s expensive – because it’s hard to argue you don’t get your money’s worth – but where to put it all. It’s obvious that Lego spends a lot of time thinking about how sets aimed at adults can be displayed conveniently on a shelf or desk, but sometimes the subject matter demands you go extra large.

According to Star Wars canon, a Super Star Destroyer is meant to be almost 12 miles long, dwarfing even the regular sized Star Destroyers, so to make this new Ultimate Collector Series version Lego has used 6,130 bricks and ended up with a model that’s 1.36 meters long, 50cm wide, and 20cm high.

While it’s not the overall biggest Lego set (that accolade belongs to the recent Sagrada Família church) it is officially the longest there’s ever been, beating Harry Potter’s Diagon Alley and, before that, the Ultimate Collectors Series version of the regular Star Destroyer.

The Super Star Destroyer first appeared in The Empire Strikes Back, as the Executor – the personal flagship of Darth Vader. It also featured in Return of the Jedi, when (spoilers) it ended up crashing into the second Death Star.

To emphasise the scale of the ship, the set also includes a to-scale Star Destroyer and a tiny 1×1 round tile to represent the Millenium Falcon, which almost got caught in its tractor beams at the end of The Empire Strikes Back.

The detailed ‘greebling’ of the central body of the shop also includes unique printed tiles meant to recreate the lights visible on the superstructure, to add that extra bit of authenticity.

Also included is a separate recreation of part of the Executor’s bridge, where Darth Vader tasked a group of bounty hunters with tracking down the Millenium Falcon, so you get the Dark Lord of the Sith himself, as well as Boba Fett, Dengar (with a new backpack build), Bossk, IG-88 (with a new moulded head), 4-LOM, and Zuckuss.

As you would imagine, none of this comes cheap and the UK price is £649.99 from Lego stores and the Lego website. Officially it’ll be available from October 4, but if you’re a Lego Insider (which requires only a free sign-up) you can buy it from October 1.

There’s an extra incentive to do that, as if you buy it between October 1 and 10 you get a free gift with purchase that isn’t available anywhere else: a recreation of Darth Vader’s Lightsaber hilt. That’s pretty neat all on its own, especially as it won’t be available to buy any other way.
