J-Law joined Instagram for love, not hate. The Hunger Games star inaugurated her arrival on the platform with a comically paradoxical promise to the 2.5 million (and counting) followers she amassed in less than half a day.

“So yeah, I’m giving it a shot,” she said, wearing a white robe. “And if anyone says anything negative, I will quit immediately. No questions asked. If anyone thinks something mean, I’ll know. I’ll know, and I’ll quit.”

She doubled down with her first IG Story featuring a black background and white text reading, “Please be mindful that any mean or aggressive comments can negatively affect the baby. It’s me. I’m the baby.”

This is Lawrence’s first real public social media account, though she’s previously owned the official, activism-dedicated @JLawrence_RepUs X account and admitted to being a “voyeur” via private accounts.

“There is always so much backlash, so many people are listening and paying attention, and they have so many opinions about absolutely everything,” Lawrence told Time in 2018. “I really don’t want to welcome that unless it’s absolutely necessary. I don’t want to put myself out there for no reason.”

Whatever reason Lawrence had for joining Instagram, it wasn’t boredom. In addition to briefly reprising her role as Katniss Everdeen in the upcoming Hunger Games prequel Sunrise on the Reaping, she’s also starring opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in the Martin Scorsese Gothic psychological horror film What Happens at Night. The A-listers play a married couple who completely unravel after traveling to a small European town to adopt a baby in a story adapted from a 2020 novel by Peter Cameron.

Aside from a cast list that also includes Patricia Clarkson, Mads Mikkelsen, and Jared Harris, few other details about the movie have been released. The Goodreads synopsis of the source material reveals more about the story: “On arrival, the couple check into the cavernous and eerily deserted Borgarfjaroasysla Grand Imperial Hotel, where the bar is always open and the lobby populated with an enigmatic cast of characters. Nothing is as it seems in this baffling, frozen world, and the more the couple struggles to claim their baby, the less they seem to know about their marriage, themselves, and life itself.”

Perhaps we’ll find out more about What Happens at Night via Lawrence’s new Instagram feed.
