A suspected robber drove a bus on the wrong side of the road after allegedly attacking the driver and throwing him out.
Bystanders tried to intervene during the ‘alarming’ incident in Telford, Shropshire, which saw the bus allegedly ram into other vehicles.
It unfolded on Court Street in Madeley yesterday after bystanders reported seeing a bus driver being assaulted.
Police were alerted at about 6.37pm to stop the bus, which was driven out of control towards the high street.
Footage shared on social media appears to show a man dressed in a beige fleece trying to headbutt the driver, believed to be on board route 100 Sutton Hill.
He then grabs the till and raises it above his head before hitting the driver.
A woman shouts: ‘What are you doing? Get off him.’
In another clip, the bus zooms down on the wrong side of the road as members of the public run after it, shouting in disbelief.
A member of the public yells ‘move! Oh my God, oh my God!’ as the bus gets close to the pavement on the wrong side.
The bus is seen trying to squeeze through a roundabout in the wrong direction.
The bus was driven down Park Way in the direction of High Street on the wrong side of the road and smashed into multiple vehicles, the police said.
The suspect, a man in 20s, was apprehended when the bus eventually stopped.
He was taken to police custody and arrested on suspicion of robbery and dangerous driving.
The bus driver was left with minor injuries, and was treated by paramedics.
No one else was injured, it is understood.
Detective Sergeant Taigh Lannie said: ‘We understand this will have been an alarming incident for those in the area this evening.
‘I’d like to reassure the community that officers responded quickly and a man has been arrested and remains in police custody.’
Anyone with images, dashcam footage or CCTV footage on Court Street, Park Way or High Street areas at the time of the incident are asked to contact West Mercia Police.
