GTA 6 will not have a Disney World or Universal Studios parody says Rockstar

Rockstar has confirmed GTA 6 will not include spoofs of Florida locations such as Disney World, but a screenshot may have a different park. 

The GTA series might be synonymous with open world violence and a killer soundtrack, but another part of its appeal is its satire of American culture. 

However, following the departure of Rockstar co-founder and head writer Dan Houser in 2020, there’s been a question of whether GTA 6 will lean so heavily on the same kind of parody. Especially as Houser himself suggested that satire in GTA was much more difficult in a post-Trump era.

While we likely won’t know definitively until the game launches on November 19, Rockstar has confirmed that the upcoming sequel will not feature a direct spoof of Florida-based theme parks like Disney World or Universal Studios. 

In an interview with Game Informer, Rockstar was asked if GTA 6 will feature locations seen in Florida’s central region, such as Orlando and its many theme parks – like Disney World, Universal Studios, and SeaWorld – or NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.

In response, Rockstar’s senior vice president of environment art, Paul McPherson, ruled out replications of these exact locations, but suggested there could be representations of them in a different form. 

‘We have to constantly evaluate the diversity of landscapes, towns, structures, landmarks, vistas, plant species, rock formations and everything else before we work with design and narrative to distill a list down that best works with and serves the game’s needs,’ McPherson said. ‘So, while we may not have those exact locations, everything we have is geared to getting that full Florida experience.’

It’s unclear if a Disney parody is part of this ‘full Florida experience’, but the GTA series has poked fun at the house of Mickey Mouse before. In GTA 5, there’s a film production company called Fred’s Pictures, which sports a logo with a Disney-esque font and a black-and-white wolf, instead of a mouse. 

It’s possible Fred’s Pictures will have some sort of presence in GTA 6 too. Some eagle-eyed fans have spotted a poster from the trailers which has a reference to Minnie Mouse, but it’s unclear if it is related to Fred’s Pictures. 

Similarly, other Reddit users have spotted a parody of NASA called ‘NADA’ on T-shirts – so these references might be littered around GTA 6’s world in different ways. 

While it sounds like there won’t be a Disney World parody, there might be another theme park. A screenshot for GTA 6 shows a giant alligator head inside some kind of park, in what might be a parody of Florida’s Gatorland resort. However, considering we now know there’ll be a zoo in GTA 6, it could be related to that instead. 

Considering Disney World is one of the things Florida is most famous for, especially from a tourist’s perspective, not having any direct parody is surprising. But whether Rockstar is worried about being sued or, as they’ve intimated, they want to go for a more serious tone, is unclear.
