Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Son Opens Up About How His Iconic Dad ‘Pushes’ Him to His Best

Joseph Baena

Joe Baena is stepping confidently into his own spotlight—and he’s not shy about crediting his famous father, Arnold Schwarzenegger, for helping shape his journey.

In a Monday, April 13, interview with GQ, the 28-year-old opened up about how his passion for bodybuilding began during his college years.

What started as a general interest in health quickly turned into something much deeper after a nudge from his dad.

How Baena Fell in Love With Bodybuilding

“My dad gave me the bodybuilding encyclopedia,” Baena shared.

As he flipped through the pages, something clicked. He found himself drawn not just to the aesthetics of bodybuilding, but to the science behind it.

Learning how muscles grow, how nutrition fuels performance, and how discipline shapes results became an obsession.

“I fell in love with weightlifting,” he explained, adding that his interest extended to eating well and understanding how the body responds to training.

That curiosity soon evolved into a full-fledged passion.

Having a legendary figure like Schwarzenegger as a mentor might sound intimidating, but for Baena, it’s been a major advantage.

Baena Talks Training With His Famous Father

When asked what it’s like to train with his father, he didn’t hesitate.

“He’s the best training partner,” Baena said simply.

But that support comes with high expectations. According to Baena, his dad doesn’t let him slack off—especially during the toughest moments.

“He pushes me,” he said. “He makes sure that I don’t slack off in the gym. When the carbs are low and the calories are low and I start getting tired, he pumps me up.”

That kind of motivation has clearly paid off.

Baena Says Competing Isn’t Easy

Baena recently celebrated a major milestone in his bodybuilding career, taking home first place in multiple categories at the NPC Natural Colorado State competition.

His wins included Men’s Open Body Heavy Weight Class and Men’s Classic Physique True Novice, marking him as a rising name in the sport.

Still, stepping on stage wasn’t easy. Baena admitted that competing had always been something he feared.

The pressure of being judged—especially with a last name like Schwarzenegger—added another layer of intensity.

But facing that fear head-on became part of the reward.

He described bodybuilding as “its own art form,” comparing the process to sculpting.

For Baena, it’s about shaping and refining the body with intention, building something that reflects both discipline and creativity.

Now, with growing confidence and a string of wins behind him, Baena is proving he’s more than just the son of an icon.
