One of dark romance’s biggest hits is making the leap from page to screen. Netflix has announced it is developing a TV series adaptation of Navessa Allen’s “Lights Out,” the BookTok phenomenon that captivated millions of readers after its 2024 debut, and fans of the “Into Darkness” series could not be more excited.

From BookTok to Netflix

“Lights Out” hit BookTok like a freight train in 2024. The story centers on Aly, an overworked trauma nurse who finds herself living out her wildest fantasies when a masked, tattooed internet personality named Josh shows up in her house. And what starts as a dark, thrilling romance quickly becomes something far more dangerous.

The book struck a nerve with readers in a major way. It’s the first book in Allen’s “Into Darkness” series, and the franchise has only grown from there. The follow-up, “Caught Up,” shot straight to number one on the New York Times bestseller list when it dropped in June 2025, and a third book, “Game On,” has since followed.

Allen has built her reputation on stories that don’t shy away from the messy, complicated side of human connection. Her stories are dark and intense, but always grounded in real emotional honesty. That balance of depth and humor is a big part of what made Lights Out so impossible for readers to put down.

Allen herself took to Instagram to share her excitement, posting the all-caps caption: “LIGHTS OUT IS IN DEVELOPMENT AT NETFLIX!!!”That energy feels entirely appropriate for a book that inspired that same kind of reaction in its readers from the very first page.

The Team Behind the Adaptation

Why Women Kill

Netflix has assembled a strong creative team to bring “Lights Out” to the screen. Hannah Schneider, known for “Why Women Kill,” “Accused,” and “The Waterfront,” will adapt the novel as showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Chernin Entertainment’s Peter Chernin and Tracey Cook will also executive produce, alongside Allen herself.

Schneider is a particularly exciting choice for this project. Her background in sharp, character-driven storytelling, especially in “Why Women Kill,” suggests she understands how to bring complex, morally layered characters to life on screen without losing what makes them so compelling on the page. That instinct will be essential for a story as nuanced as “Lights Out.”

Chernin Entertainment isn’t new to making things work on Netflix either. The production company has major titles like the “Fear Street” films under its belt, along with Apple TV+ hits like “Chief of War” and “See.” In other words, this isn’t a team that takes on a project without the intention of doing it justice.

What Fans Can Look Forward To

There’s also real potential for this to grow into something bigger. A key side character from “Lights Out” steps into the spotlight as the lead love interest in “Caught Up,” which means Netflix could easily have a multi-season roadmap already built in.

For fans of the “Into Darkness” series, this is the news they have been waiting for. And for anyone who hasn’t yet discovered Navessa Allen’s work, now is the perfect time to pick up “Lights Out” before it hits the screen.
