Eve Plumb may be forever remembered as Jan Brady, but the beloved sitcom star says one thing fans often get wrong is assuming âThe Brady Bunchâ made her wealthy.
The actress, 68, recently opened up about the surprisingly small amount she earns from reruns of the iconic family sitcom, revealing that despite the showâs decades-long popularity, the financial reality looks much different than many people imagine.
Plumb Reveals How Much in Her Book
In her newly released memoir, âHappiness Included: Jan Brady and Beyond,â Plumb reflected on the misconception that stars of classic television series continue earning substantial money from syndicated episodes.
âIf I had a dime for every rerun episode, Iâd pay off the national deficit,â Plumb wrote, according to Page Six.
She quickly followed up with a blunt reality check, âI donât.â
Plumb portrayed middle daughter Jan Brady on âThe Brady Bunchâ from 1969 to 1974, becoming one of televisionâs most recognizable child stars.
Though the show only aired for five seasons, it gained enormous popularity in reruns and eventually became a pop culture staple.
Still, Plumb said fans continue to assume the cast benefits financially from the showâs lasting success.
Speaking with PauseRewind in April, she explained that misconceptions about the sitcom remain a regular part of her life.
âItâs a challenge because itâs so repetitive,â Plumb said. âI have to explain every time that it wasnât popular before the âSaturday Night Liveâ skit did it, that we donât make residuals, that I didnât hate âThe Brady Bunch.ââ
Plumb was also referring to the now-famous âMarcia! Marcia! Marcia!â line, which many viewers associate with her character.
While the phrase became a cultural touchstone, she noted that its popularity exploded only after âSaturday Night Liveâ spoofed the series years later.
Jodie Sweetin Recently Revealed How Much She Makes
Her comments echo concerns raised by other actors from classic sitcoms navigating the streaming era.
Earlier this year, âFull Houseâ star Jodie Sweetin shared a similarly eye-opening story about residual payments.
âI got a one-cent check the other day,â Sweetin said during an April episode of the âMcBride Rewindâ podcast. âThereâs no syndication anymore because itâs all in streaming. Who gets paid for that? Nobody gets paid for that.â
Plumb Reveals Behind-the-Scenes Moments
Beyond financial realities, Plumb has recently reflected on behind-the-scenes moments from her âBrady Bunchâ years while promoting her memoir.
Among the more surprising revelations? A brief attempt at romance with co-star Christopher Knight, who played her on-screen brother, Peter Brady.
âIt was sweet,â Plumb told Page Six. âIt was fun, but we were really already by that time just too good of friends to make that transition into being romantic partners.â
The actress wrote in her memoir that any romantic attempt quickly fizzled into laughter.
âAny attempts at making out that evening ended with laughter and resignation that weâd always be sister and brother, even in real life,â she reportedly shared.
Plumb also reflected on occasional tension behind the scenes between actor Robert Reed and creator Sherwood Schwartz.
âWe knew there was tension,â she recalled in an interview with Womanâs World. âYouâd hear the door slam, and then weâd go on and do something else.â
Still, she remembers the set fondly â especially the warmth of Florence Henderson, who played TV mom Carol Brady.
âThere was just this feeling of safety and of respect,â Plumb said. âYou looked to them as an adult⦠because youâre a child and they have to tell you whatâs going on.â
