Resident Evil is set to become an annual franchise under Capcom, but don’t expect any spin-offs anytime soon.
Capcom’s Resident Evil is more popular than ever thanks to its consistent quality across the mainline games and the remakes that began in 2019.
The latest mainline title, Resident Evil Requiem, is the fastest-selling game in the series, while 2023’s Resident Evil 4 is the best-selling remake of the PlayStation 5 generation. In other words, the franchise is in very rude health.
To try and maintain that level of success, Capcom is looking to knock out new games in the franchise at a regular, yearly cadence.
Speaking in the latest issue of Game Informer, Capcom producer Masachika Kawata said the decision to create so many Resident Evil remakes partially stems from the aim of putting out new games in the series on a yearly basis.
‘One of the reasons for creating remakes is producing a new entry in the Resident Evil series every year would be quite an undertaking and a difficult task,’ Kawata said. ‘So, being able to revisit older games and remake them helps Capcom meet that goal of releasing a Resident Evil title each year, but it also allows the team to continually challenge themselves and hone their craft.’

Kawata states these remakes help Capcom fund new IP like Pragmata too, adding: ‘That’s not to say the remakes are any less important. In fact, they’re just as important as the mainline titles. Capcom is lucky enough to have found this cycle that can continue to provide us with the financial resources to create things like new entries in the Resident Evil series and completely new IP like Pragmata. So there is that relationship there.’
Between 2019 and 2023, Capcom released a new Resident Evil game every year – if you include 2022’s terrible multiplayer spin-off Resident Evil Re: Verse. The following two years saw nothing, but Resident Evil Requiem launched in 2026, and Resident Evil Veronica is set for 2027.
If Capcom is planning to launch a Resident Evil game at a yearly clip, the rumoured remakes of Resident Evil Zero and Resident Evil 1 could be planned for 2028 and 2029, respectively. That could leave the door open for the next mainline title in 2030, although there was a five-year gap between 2021’s Resident Evil Village and Requiem, so that may not be enough time.
While you might think this could leave the door open for more spin-offs, akin to Resident Evil Revelations or another multiplayer offering, Kawata states Capcom doesn’t have these on the priority list at the moment.
‘Maybe there are a lot of people out there who would like to see more spin-off titles or such, but honestly, the team is giving everything it has right now, working on things like our new entries like Requiem or remakes,’ he added. ‘So honestly, at the moment, that’s where our efforts [are] being focused. We are so focused on pouring our energy into that, I don’t think there’s a whole lot left right now for a spin-off.’
If there aren’t any spin-offs planned, Capcom could be counting DLC as part its annual drops. Resident Evil Requiem story DLC is currently in development, which will launch in late 2027, according to insider Dusk Golem. Similarly, it’s claimed Resident Evil Veronica will receive DLC at some point in 2028 and ‘over a year’ after its launch.
Regardless of whether DLC counts as a new title in Capcom’s eyes, if the rumours are true about the upcoming remakes, Resident Evil will be well served over the coming years. However, it does raise the question of what they’ll do when the remake well dries up, and if they’ll eventually try and tackle lesser entries like Resident Evil 6.
Beyond the games, Resident Evil’s resurgence only looks set to continue in 2026, with the release of director Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil movie on September 18.
