ChatGPT plays Read Dead Redemption 2 but it doesn’t quite get it

Don’t worry, you’d still win in a fight with the AI

Researchers had Artificial Intelligence take on Red Dead Redemption 2 and it did well, but it’s still not a better gamer than you.

AI’s influence on video games has been growing for years now and is clearly only going to increase over time, especially with Microsoft’s vested interest in the technology.

It’s increasingly being used to create video games, but video games can also be used to develop AI. The most famous example being when a YouTuber taught their AI to play Pokémon Red, and it did really well.

Now researchers from China and Singapore have put their ChatGTP agent to the test in a far more challenging game: Red Dead Redemption 2. Their results show AI isn’t a better gamer than you yet, but it may only be a matter of time.

The research paper tried to gauge how good AI is at a wide range of tasks, compared to humans, called Artificial General Intelligence.

The researchers had its OpenAI GPT-4V agent, a ChatGPT system, identify audio and visual cues in Red Dead Redemption 2 to play the game as intended and solve the many tasks in the game.

The AI was tasked with a number of goals from the start of the game, such as following Dutch into town, opening a satchel to eat something, manoeuvring the landscape to find John, finding a shop and buying something, and protecting Javier from the wolves.

AI is already good at solving specific tasks, but the wide range of tasks in a game like Red Dead Redemption 2 is a much more challenging undertaking.

As a result, the AI was quickly overwhelmed by the game’s diverse problem-solving missions.

‘Due to GPT-4V’s poor performance in spatial understanding and fine-manipulation skills, it can be challenging for our agent to perform certain actions, like entering or leaving a building, or getting to precise indoor locations to retrieve specific items.’

‘Additionally, the high latency of GPT-4V’s responses also makes it harder for an agent to deal with time-sensitive events, e.g., during combat,’ the research paper said (PDF)

Though the AI agent, named Cradle, found the game challenging, the experiment was a success, the paper suggests:

‘Except for the task of Protect Dutch, which involves a fast-paced gun battle, Search house, which requires the agent to explore a complex indoor environment,
and the open-ended task with long-horizon, Cradle can complete all tasks in the main storyline consistently.’

So don’t worry about being out-played by AI in the short term, but it might not be long until AI characters can do everything their human equivalents can.
