Classic British 80s TV show could make huge comeback 25 years after final episode

Blackadder writer Ben Elton has revealed he wants to bring back the classic sitcom.

Running from 1983 until 1989, the series consisted of four seasons, as well as several one-off instalments, the last of which aired in 1999.

Starring Rowan Atkinson as Edmund Blackadder and Tony Robinson as Baldrick, each season was set in a different historical period and also starred Stephen Fry, Tim McInnerny and Hugh Laurie.

The first series, The Black Adder, was written by Richard Curtis and Rowan Atkinson, while subsequent series were written by Curtis and Elton.

Now the latter has said he is keen to give fans what they want and continue the story.

However, instead of bringing it back to screens, he is considering the possibility of it returning as a play, following stage adaptations of other hit sitcoms like Only Fools and Horses and Fawlty Towers.

‘A Blackadder play, if Richard was keen on it, I’d be interested. Not an adaptation of episodes, it would be an original play,’ he said.

‘When I wrote Upstart Crow, I did three series and three Christmas specials for TV, which was a load of writing, but I’m proud of the fact I then did an original play.

‘If we were to do that with Adder it would be the same,’ he added when speaking to The Sun.

Although he admitted he was unsure if they could ‘ever make it happen’, Elton said of getting the original cast to return: ‘If they want to be in it, that’s up to them.’

After working on Blackadder, Elton went on to write The Beautiful Game, We Will Rock You Tonight’s the Night, and Love Never Dies the sequel to The Phantom of the Opera.

However, he acknowledged bringing the show back made him nervous.

‘There were a couple of efforts to do a bit of Adder, with mixed results, and I’m very clear in my mind we do not want to f*** up something as loved as Blackadder by going back to it,’ he added.

Although Blackadder went on to become one of the most celebrated shows of all time, Robinson previously told Metro.co.uk he thought the original script wasn’t very good.

‘I got the script and thought it was great because I would be with these people (creators Richard Curtis and Rowan Atkinson), but as for the script itself, I thought it was a little bit rubbish,’ he shared.

‘I think everybody knew that and they hadn’t got it to where they wanted it to be and that is why you made pilots in those days…it was experimental and a petri dish to encourage you to take risks.’

Blackadder is streaming on BBC iPlayer.
