A Portuguese TV presenter has claimed Cristiano Ronaldo’s family found out he was marrying his long-term girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez ’30 seconds’ before he tied the knot.
The couple got married on August 11 at an ‘intimate’ civil ceremony in Portugal, after a near 10-year relationship.
The ceremony took place at Cristiano’s £30million mansion in the exclusive Quinta da Marinha area of Cascais.
Turns out ‘intimate’ might not have been an exaggeration as newspaper Jornal de Noticias published a copy of the couple’s marriage certificate late yesterday, saying only four witnesses were present, as well as their children.
It also claimed the football star’s doting mum Dolores and his three siblings did not attend.
Shortly before the document was released, famous Portuguese television presenter Cristina Ferreira made an astonishing claim about the footballer’s family’s absence from his big day.
Speaking on TVI programme Dois as 10, she said: ‘It will cause a lot of problems because the family wasn’t present.
‘And they shouldn’t even have known. Or if they did know, it was 30 seconds beforehand.’
Co-host Claudio Ramos added on the programme: ‘I really hope that what we said here, which had to do with the impressions we get from what exists on social media, did not actually cause sadness in the family, that things were not as they apparently seem.’
Dolores, who has had to refute claims over the years of a bad relationship with her daughter-in-law, gave her blessing to the star couple’s union.
Shortly after they announced they were married, she posted a heart emoticon on Cristiano’s official social media along with the snap he published of their rings.
Cristiano’s sister Katia Aveiro, who is based in Brazil but travelled to her native Madeira at the weekend to meet family and friends, did the same.
She is currently posting on social media from the northern Portuguese city of Braga where she has joined up with her son Dinis, who plays football for a club based nearby.
She has yet to address reports that she and other members of Cristiano’s family were absent from the Cascais wedding ceremony.
He had captioned his announcement post, a picture of them holding hands with gold bands on display, with a simple: ‘C❤️G.’
A representative for the footballer also confirmed the union, saying: ‘Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodriguez were married today in a civil ceremony in Cascais, Portugal, and are now officially husband and wife.
‘The ceremony was a private and intimate moment attended by their five children.’
Cristiano, 41, and his media personality partner, 32, have been together since 2016, having met at the Gucci store in Madrid, where she worked as a sales manager at the time.
Speaking of his longtime love, he said: ‘I’m going to marry her because I believe it’s the right time. Not just because she’s the mother of my children — but because she’s the person I love most.’
The couple share five children: twins Eva Maria and Mateo, nine, daughter Alana, eight, daughter Bella, four, and 16-year-old son Cristiano Jr, whom Ronaldo welcomed prior to their relationship.
