Spoilers for Euphoria season three, episode five ahead.
Euphoria fans have been left horrified by the sexual sequences Sydney Sweeney’s character, Cassie, endured in episode five as the backlash rises.
The HBO series – created by Sam Levinson – returned for a long-awaited third season earlier this year with the main cast including Sydney, Jacob Elordi, Zendaya, Alexa Demie, and Hunter Schafer all returning, a few years on from high school.
In the latest episodes, Cassie (who is now married to Nate) has become an OnlyFans content creator, and the show has not held back in showing just how far she’s willing to take it – no matter the requests.
From rubbing cocaine on her genitals to dressing as a baby, her plotline has been slammed as ‘vulgar’ and left viewers ‘deeply uncomfortable’.
The latest episode is no exception, with some feeling as though it has gone to further lengths than ever.
In the opening scenes of the episode, we see that Cassie’s OnlyFans account has blown up, and are subjected to a montage of all the fetish-filled requests she undertakes, from humiliation kinks to a ‘this little piggy’ routine.
Shortly following this, we enter an extended scene in which Cassie turns into a leopard print-clad giantess (in a nod to Attack of the 50 Foot Woman), as she stomps through LA, wreaking havoc.
The scene then takes an even more disturbing turn when we see one of her clients masturbating to the role-play scenario, when the breasts on the giant version of her burst through the window and get licked by him.
It’s all par for the course for creator Sam at this point, but for many, the opening scenes have proved to be a step too far.
‘Sam Levinson adding a scene of a giant Cassie smashing buildings with her boobs for no reason,’ Lina wrote on X.
‘I want to erase that giant Cassie scene from my memory man, someone lock Sam Levinson up,’ Eve reflected.
‘Sam Levinson is making straight up fetish porn and he needs to be stopped,’ SkyeRileyyy declared.
‘A close up of Cassie’s tits breaking the glass and an entire montage of her naked and filming OnlyFans content….like what are we doing here,’ Kenny asked.
Over on Reddit, user hiddencnidocyte questioned: ‘Is Euphoria now anything else than a misogynistic humiliation ritual?’ when referencing the episode five opening.
‘There’s no taste, unnecessary hypersexualisation, very racist / transmisogynistic / misogynistic not-so-undertones,’ they added.
‘There used to be a vulnerability/sensitivity, and sadness about Cassie’s character that was easy to sympathise with, even if you disagreed with her actions. Now she’s just the ‘dumb blonde bimbo’ caricature,’ Echenais reflected.
‘Right now she’s just looking like a vessel for Sam’s fantasies,’ Chutneysandwich16 argued.
And the above is not the only controversy the show is courting this season. It also faced backlash for a sex scene featuring Nazi paraphernalia, and many viewers also needed to switch off during Nate and Cassie’s wedding, which took a stomach-turning, gruesome turn.
With just three episodes left to go, time will tell what Cassie and Nate’s fate will be, with their relationship and lives looking more and more in peril by the minute.
Euphoria is available to stream on Sky, NOW and HBO Max.
