Production on season three of Euphoria has been put on hold by TV bosses before it has even started.

Fans have been not-so-patiently waiting for any information on upcoming episodes of the HBO teen drama, starring Zendaya, Jacob Elordi and Hunter Schafer, since the second series premiered at the beginning of 2022.

Sydney Sweeney, who plays Cassie Howard, recently sent us all into meltdown when she confirmed that she would be jumping straight into filming the third season, following work in films including Anyone But You, Madam Web and her new horror movie, Immaculate.

Amid claims the program, created by Sam Levinson, had been axed altogether, it was confirmed that production has been pushed back, meaning the gang will have some time before returning to East Highland High School.

A spokesperson for HBO told Metro.co.uk in a statement: ‘HBO and Sam Levinson remain committed to making an exceptional third season.

‘In the interim, we are allowing our in-demand cast to pursue other opportunities.’

Deadline reports that there had been no firm production start date, but things were expected to pick up in the next few months.

It is thought that the new episodes will still premiere in 2025.

A lot has changed since the second series aired – beloved Fezco actor Angus Cloud died last July, while producer Kevin Turen died in November.

There have been questions over how the show will continue, and what a third series could possibly look like.

Details have been scarce on what we can expect from a third visit to East Highland, but Sam teasingly told Elle Magazine that he sees it as a ‘film noir’.

Through Zendaya’s character of Rue, he is hoping to ‘explore what it means to be an individual with principles in a corrupt world.’

The news of the delay may surprise many as Sydney whipped everyone into a frenzy when she spoke about her busy few months less than two weeks ago, explaining that she would be jumping straight back into her role as Cassie.

Discussing taking time off after her work on Immaculate while at SXSW, she simply replied: ‘I go into Euphoria.’

Remaining coy on details involving if she’d seen a script, she added: ‘Maybe. I don’t know.’

In a later chat with Josh Horowitz for the Happy Sad Confused podcast at 92NY in New York last week, she confessed that she is worried to speak openly about the program, comparing it to a Marvel release.

‘Honestly, it’s, like, as scary as talking about Marvel,’ she quipped. ‘I said one thing, and it went everywhere.’

Coleman Domingo also touched on the time difference between the second and third season in a candid interview with GQ, and delved into Sam’s intricate writing process.

‘[Sam is] a person who writes and rewrites and writes and rewrites again, because I think he’s wrestling with what’s important,’ the Ali actor told the outlet.

‘He’s responding immediately to what the ills of the world are. I know that the one thing I can tell you is that he’s very much interested in the existential question of who we are right now. Our souls.

‘That’s what he wants to figure out with season three.’

Jacob – who stars as Nate Jacobs – voiced his hopes that they can return to the set soon, joking they may need some camera trickery to keep everyone looking age-appropriate for high school.

Appearing on the Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon in January, he said: ‘I hope [filming is] soon, otherwise they’re going to have to Benjamin Button me or something.

‘I’m going to have a bad back, walking down the hallway.

‘I’m assuming that we’re going to have to go forward,’ he said, addressing rumors of a possible time-jump. ‘Otherwise it’s going to seem like a weird bit.’
