Though James Van Der Beek could not attend due to illness, his presence was still deeply felt. The actor recorded a special video message that played before the audience.

“I can’t believe I’m not there,” Van Der Beek, 48, said. “I can’t believe I don’t get to hug my cast mates, my beautiful cast in person, and I just wanted to stand on that stage and thank every single person in this theater for being here tonight. From the cast to the crew to everybody who donated their time and has been so generous. And especially every single last one of you. You’re the best fans in the world. Thank you for coming.”

He then revealed the night’s surprise “understudy” stepping in to play Dawson Leery: none other than Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Family Support & Cast Celebration

Even though Van Der Beek was grounded in Austin, his wife, Kimberly, made sure he was included.

She filmed fans lined up outside the theater and shared the excitement with him. Kimberly also confirmed on social media that she attended the reunion with their six children — Olivia, Joshua, Annabel, Emilia, Gwendolyn, and Jeremiah.

The kids later joined the cast on stage to sing the show’s iconic theme song “I Don’t Want to Wait,” creating one of the night’s most heartwarming moments.

Van Der Beek joked in his message, “Now, obviously, on Dawson’s Creek, I had an understudy. But this is Broadway.” He then introduced Miranda, calling him “a ridiculously overqualified replacement” who his kids would “consider an upgrade.”

Williams, Holmes, and Jackson were joined by Mary Beth Peil, John Wesley Shipp, Mary-Margaret Humes, Nina Repeta, Kerr Smith, Meredith Monroe, and Busy Philipps. Together, the cast raised money for F Cancer, turning the reunion into both a celebration of the show’s lasting bond and a powerful tribute to their beloved co-star.
