The racing world is continuing to mourn the shocking passing of NASCAR legend Kyle Busch after his family revealed the medical cause behind his sudden death at just 41 years old.

Busch’s Family Revealed He Passed from Pneumonia

On Saturday, May 23, Busch’s family confirmed that the two-time NASCAR champion died after severe pneumonia progressed into sepsis, causing what they described as “rapid and overwhelming associated complications.”

The heartbreaking update came two days after Busch’s passing on Thursday, May 21.

“Kyle Busch died after severe pneumonia progressed into sepsis, resulting in rapid and overwhelming associated complications,” the family shared in a statement released through Dakota Hunter, vice president of Kyle Busch Companies.

The family also requested privacy as they continue to grieve. “The family asks for continued understanding and privacy during this difficult time.”

Busch Was Briefly Hospitalized

The news comes after Busch was hospitalized following what had initially been described as a severe illness.

One day before his death, the NASCAR icon reportedly passed out while using a Chevrolet racing simulator in North Carolina.

Earlier statements from the family indicated he would miss his scheduled activities at Charlotte Motor Speedway while receiving treatment.

“Kyle has experienced a severe illness resulting in hospitalization,” the Busch family previously shared. “He is currently undergoing treatment and will not compete in any of his scheduled activities this weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway. We ask for understanding and privacy as our family navigates this situation.”

Following the announcement, Richard Childress Racing confirmed that Austin Hill would step in for Busch in the No. 8 Chevrolet.

“Kyle Busch’s health is our upmost priority and he and his family have the full resources of RCR behind them,” the organization shared. “Kyle is an integral part of our organization and we wish him a safe and speedy recovery. His No. 8 Chevrolet will be ready and waiting for him. We’re thankful to Austin Hill for stepping in to drive the No. 8 Chevrolet this weekend.”

“Please keep Kyle and the Busch family in your prayers, and help us respect the family’s privacy at this time,” the statement concluded.

Busch’s passing stunned fans and the motorsports community alike, especially given how recently he had still been competing.

The Family Recently Celebrated His Son’s 11th Birthday

Just days before his death, the NASCAR champion had celebrated his son Brexton’s 11th birthday on social media, writing, “Your mom & I are so proud of who you’re turning out to be!”

Known for his fierce competitiveness and undeniable talent, Busch built one of the most successful careers in NASCAR history.

He captured Cup Series championships in 2015 and 2019 and amassed hundreds of wins across NASCAR’s national divisions, cementing his place as one of the sport’s all-time greats.

Busch is survived by his wife, Samantha Busch, and the couple’s two children, Brexton and Lennix.

Tributes from fellow racers, fans, and loved ones have continued pouring in as many struggle to process the sudden loss of one of NASCAR’s biggest stars.
