I also thought the weekend feature about the death of Xbox and PlayStation was pretty dead on. No one knows exactly how it’s going to play out, but console sales are 20% down in a year? That’s a complete disaster.

I don’t really understand how GTA 6 won’t help at least a bit but then I guess the real question is how much worse would it be if GTA 6 hadn’t happen to be coming out this year? People don’t have the money and both companies aren’t providing the reasons to get a console, in terms of the games.

I’d also say, to those that follow the industry, neither of them are projecting an aura that they know what they’re doing or even that they fully understand the mess they’re in. Most of you reading this probably already have a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X but how many of you are going to get a PlayStation 6 day one, after everything that’s happened in the last few years?

Free will
Really enjoying Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced and glad it’s doing well, but I hope more remakes is not the lesson Ubisoft takes away from it. I’d much rather see them do new games that are not action role-players, but more like these older games that are straight action and stealth.

I have enjoyed the new games, but I feel the constant levelling up only encourages the bloat that most people seem to hate. If you’re constantly trying to get to another level then you need things that are higher level to fight and then a reason to go on after that, it’s a loop that goes on forever.

It’s not that I don’t enjoy being stuck in these worlds, but it feels far less like I’m being manipulated if I’m choosing where to go and what to do, rather than always chasing the numbers game in a role-player.

Pirate code
Emulation isn’t much of a solution to Sony abandoning the PC and physical media but while I’m usually against piracy, because it means hardworking developers not getting paid, I can’t bring myself to care in this instance.

It’s yet another example of ordinary gamers caring far more about gaming and its history than any of the companies that could make a difference.

At a time when even the most obscure (and usually awful) horror movies from 60 years ago can get a cleaned up Blu-ray release, video games just blink out of existence once the severs switch off. If the publishers obviously don’t care about any of this I don’t why we fans should be expected to respect their rules.

Supply and demand
One positive from the all-digital future being forced upon us is used games prices will sky rocket for collectors. I’ve no intention of selling my games but should my console give up on me, cha ching! With all the digital only buyers, the chances of me owning a most wanted game should be fairly high and with the Xbox seemingly being left way behind my collection will be rare even though I get triple-A and double-A games.

The rarity of people buying Xbox and wanting to complete a collection could mean a lucrative future. I own Lollipop Chainsaw and it spiked in value for a while.

Fingers crossed (for me). I’m in no hurry to get rid but at least it’s a positive thought to hold on to.

GC: Your positive is the fact that physical games will become even more expensive for people to afford?

Unclean trick
Funny that reader asking over the Switch 2 Lite and then we immediately get news of the OLED model. Not quite Inbox magic, but it’s definitely in the right area.

The rumour sounds very believable; the question is how much it’s going to cost. I suspect Nintendo will go for a fairly high price in order to make the cost of the base model (whose price is going up soon) look good by comparison.

A dirty trick? Kind of but at this point if that’s going to be the worst a company does then I feel we’ve got off lightly. It’ll also be a chance to see if all those people complaining about blurring, or whatever it is, on the current screen actually pony up and buy the improved version. Somehow I bet they find better things to spend their money on.

The catalyst
I’m very curious to see where the upset about Sony going digital-only is going to end. Although I have mixed and matched, I basically went all-digital years ago and never really thought much about it. It was just the way things were going and not a conscious decision, which I think, from talking to my friends, is how it’s been for many other people.

Sony has already changed what the factory makes and the PlayStation 6 is obviously going to be digital-only from the start, so there’s really no going back. Even if Sony did somehow give in to fans what would that gain them? An extra year of disc releases, that’s literally it.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m totally against what they’ve done and the way they’ve done it. But I don’t think most people are really that bothered by it. It’s just the spark that’s reminded them how awful Sony has been this gen and I think it’s all exploded around this one issue, even though people are upset about a whole bunch of different stuff.

Will Sony realise this? Will they care? I think we can all guess that the answer to both those questions is no, so I’m curious to see how much needless damage they’ll do to themselves over the next few weeks and months.

Off the boil
As an impartial observer, who doesn’t play either franchise, it is kind of shocking how quickly Battlefield 6 has been forgotten. I remember last year there were all the stories of it outselling Call Of Duty and then absolutely nothing. Until your story on Tuesday, I’d completely forgotten it even exists.

That always seems to mean some kind of fan revolt over the way the publisher’s handling a game. Considering how many developers EA put on the job it’s kind of shocking that they’re already having problems with not enough content or players. All the desperation to get a live service hit and they can’t even keep it on the boil once they do get one.

Virtual morality
After reading your D-topia review yesterday I started to think about player morality and how it’s tested in games. OK, you can easily run amok in Grand Theft Auto, so those titles are probably not the best assessment of video gaming morals, but other games offer specific conscience-testing decisions.

Take Fallout 3 for example. I blew up Megaton at least twice, and the first time I facilitated that settlement’s destruction was just to see what would happen. I guess, with regards to that game, helping to wipe Megaton off the map makes me a bad person, but I like to believe that I’m a bit nicer and more considerate in real life.

I would love to see the data. How many players make bad/evil choices in games versus how many gamers are pure and righteous? OK, since these moral lapses only exist in a fictional digital world they don’t actually matter, but I’d like to know how players behave nevertheless.

Never mind F-Zero, do people think Nintendo will have an actual brand new, big budget IP this gen? I wouldn’t bet on it and yet that’s what I want to see more than anything from them. So annoying.

I have been a gamer for over 30 years now and I have never once met or talked to anyone that plans Counter-Strike. How is it always the number one or two played game on Steam?
