Garry’s Mod forced to remove all Nintendo Content from Steam Workshop

You can see how Nintendo wouldn’t like this sort of thing

Nintendo has issued a takedown request against Garry’s Mod, which has forced it to remove 20 years’ worth of unofficial content.

Whenever there’s a story about Nintendo forcing a fan-made game to stop, it’s always a mystery as to why anyone thought they would get away with it, since that’s what Nintendo always does.

Nintendo is hyper protective of its IP and not doesn’t like piracy or unofficial emulation, but it also doesn’t want anyone else making games or mods featuring its character. However, since there’s been content on there for 20 years now, the makers of Garry’s Mod probably thought they were safe.

The popular sandbox game has had unofficial Nintendo related content since the start but for some reason Nintendo has only now decided that it all has to be removed.

There had been some confusion as to whether the takedown demand really was from Nintendo or a troll known for doing such things, but a post on Steam, from developer Facepunch Studios, proves that they at least think it is a genuine request.

‘Some of you may have noticed that certain Nintendo related workshop items have recently been taken down. This is not a mistake, the takedowns came from Nintendo,’ says the note.

‘Honestly, this is fair enough. This is Nintendo’s content and what they allow and don’t allow is up to them. They don’t want you playing with that stuff in Garry’s Mod – that’s their decision, we have to respect that and take down as much as we can.

‘This is an ongoing process, as we have 20 years of uploads to go through. If you want to help us by deleting your Nintendo related uploads and never uploading them again, that would help us a lot.’

Content has already started to disappear from the game, but it will probably take several weeks before it’s all gone.

The only surprise here is that it took Nintendo so long to make a move, considering Garry’s Mod allows you to do anything with the character models it contains, which has led to plenty of horror games featuring Nintendo characters and Mario and co. wielding guns.

It may be that since the success of the Super Mario Bros. movie, and the upcoming live action Zelda, Nintendo has become even more protective of its IP and any leeway it gave to certain outlets has been rescinded.

Either that or Nintendo intends to make its own equivalent of Garry’s Mod, featuring characters from all its games, but as appealing as that may sound it’s probably unlikely.
